stocking book recommendations for 9 year old girl

She's currently reading the Clarice Bean books and has recently gotten into chapter style books (rather than the colour picture books). I'd love to put a book in her stocking, it'll be the first year we've been able to as it's the first year she's been reading standard size books (i.e. not the big square ones that have the pictures in e.g. Charlie and Lola) that'll fit in her stocking. What sort of thing would be suitable? She's also reading the Paddington books at the moment and has a big box of Horrid Henry books just to give an idea of what she's into.

No idea what it's like, but I've taken a punt on 'Tinsel' for my 9yo.

My DD enjoys the Jessica Ennis-Hill books. There's lots of them to choose from. If your DD is into animals she will most likely love them too.

Sorry I should have said, they are a series called Evie's Magic Bracelet so she'd need to read them in order. here's book 1

Have read Mr Gum? If not, you should. Hilarious for years to come!

The Worst Witch?

TriSeaSwim99 · 01/12/2020 15:58

My DD just turned nine likes the Tom Gates Books, there’s loads of them and Max Crumbly books by Rene Russell - she also wrote Dork Diaries if she’s more ‘girlier’. There’s the massive range of Rainbow Fairy books by Daisy Meadows and she’s also written some unicorn magic books.

Quornflakegirl · 01/12/2020 15:58

My 8 year olds love Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Judy Blume Fudge series, The Worst Witch.

JessicaJoans · 01/12/2020 16:56

Check out the “Daisy and the trouble with...” books

ShedFace · 01/12/2020 20:22

Dogman, Tom Gates, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Bad Guys are favourite series’ here.

Thanks so much for these idea :)

What sort of age is David Walliams aimed at?

My 8 very nearly 9 year old like Jaquelin Wilson books. Her fave is Sleepovers. She also likes the Secret 7 series and the Queen's nose.

Ormally · 04/12/2020 17:39

Worst Witch is great and the According to Humphrey books are my new favourite - very original and work for that age but if older you will see more in them too.

ShipshapeShore · 04/12/2020 17:42

Another vote for the Daisy and the Trouble With... series. My DD devours them and she's not a big reader at all.

DeathMetalMum · 04/12/2020 17:46

Just repeating what others have suggested. Dork diaries, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The worst witch, Beast Quest, Tom Gates, 13 Story Treehouse series, first few Harry Potter, some Jacqueline Wilson but I'd read the description as some themes are aimed at older readers.

Mine don't really like the David Walliams books. But they are around the right age but are much bigger books than the others mentioned.

I’ve got the Christmasaurus for my 8yo DD. Tinsel looks good. Will remember that one for next year!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 05/12/2020 08:56

The Mask of Aribella by Anna Houghton.
The Accidental Pirates by Claire Fayers.
The Pages and Co series by Anna James.
The Boy Who Grew Dragons by Andy Shepherd.
Dragon Mountain by Katie and Kevin Tsang
The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates by Jenny Pearson.

I could go on for a very long time but I'll leave it at that!

Unless you maybe add Goth Girl to the list. And Sophie Anderson although she may appreciate Sophie Anderson more in a year or so.

If you look up The Reader Teacher on Google too then he has lists of suggested books by age, lots of reviews etc to help you get started.
You could also look up Books Up North which has a children's review panel so all the reviews are straight from the kids themselves. They don't change anything except neaten them up a bit if needed, my dd reviews for them.
