boxing day and 27th food

DH and I will be spending Christmas Day with parents where they'll do the full Christmas dinner - turkey, pigs in blankets etc. We've then got DSD9 from Boxing Day onwards and then parents & sister are coming over on the 27th. I'm just trying to think what food to do for boxing day and the 27th and I'm stuck this year. I wouldn't mind doing roast dinner on boxing day but DH gets fed up of them very quickly and doesn't want it two days in a row. Problem is he doesn't know what he does want, just what he doesn't.

What Christmas type food can I do that's not a roast? I desperately need ideas!

fillet steak, potato gratin

caperplips · 01/12/2020 15:51

Baked ham with macaroni cheese

Foobydoo · 01/12/2020 15:55

A Christmas ham served hot with bowls of salad buttered veg, buttered new potatoes, sliced crusty bread, pork pie, sauces and pickles.

DunravenBadger · 01/12/2020 16:27

Ooh @caperplips love the steak idea! Could get some lovely peppercorn sauce in to go with it.

@Foobydoo love that idea too :)

I hate meal planning at the best of times but feel there's so much pressure at Christmas. I do appreciate nice food though so it'll be nice to do something different to the usual (spag bol most nights these days!).

Boxing Day for us is always cold turkey, cold ham, a green salad, hot mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, bread sauce, stuffing, Branston and pickled walnuts. Followed by mince pies with cream or custard and a bit of a lie down :)

gingercat02 · 01/12/2020 16:43

Boxing day cold cuts, cheese, chutney, lovely bread, salads, leftover pud general all day picking with wine/port/beer
27th we have never had traditions but something different from the previous days so steak or curry or pasta
Steak pie for YND Scottish tradition

Hot roast pork and stuffing rolls with coleslaw.

We always have a huge indian takeaway on boxing day .

The 27th will be salads a spread, using up cold meats, etc. Not only is it a great way to use up leftovers, but the lighter food is usually very welcome after the overindulgence between 24th-26th.

Justmuddlingalong · 01/12/2020 16:53

I'd leave it up to DH then. But then I'm twisted that way. 😉

happymummy12345 · 01/12/2020 16:55

We always have more of the meat with mash on Boxing Day. I love it

caperplips · 01/12/2020 17:21

We always have the cold meats (ham and turkey ) usually with baked potatoes and salad / veg but the OP has said that they are eating in her parents on Christmas Day and then hosting on 26th so she won't have left lover cold meat.

OP you could consider roasting whole salmon either?

Cherryrainbow · 01/12/2020 17:50

Turkey dinner casserole
Filled rolls and nibbly bits
Bubble and squeak with steak and eggs
Brie and cranberry toasties
Pizza

XiCi · 01/12/2020 17:56

We always get a takeaway on Boxing Day. Nothing worse than having to cook a big meal again on 26th! If your DSD is 9 she'd probably be over the moon with a Dominos. 27th when everyone is over I would probably do something nice but very simple from m&s like beef Wellington/salmon on croute etc or do a big beef bourginon or such like. Delia has a recipe for braised steak au poivre which is gorgeous and just cooked in one pot so pretty easy for that number of guests

CommanderBurnham · 01/12/2020 18:00

Pie and mash
Curry

Deelish75 · 01/12/2020 18:23

Boxing Day lunch is usually picnic foods and salad with Christmas cake or Yuletide log. The evening meal is usually a shop bought steak pie and chips or pre made cottage pie.
Would you consider doing a roast on the 27th? There will be more people there and you’ll have had a break in between.

TheAnswerIsCake · 01/12/2020 18:36

Boxing Day is usually a bit of a beige buffet. We buy Christmas party snacks like mozzarella sticks, sausage rolls, pork pie etc, and tend to have cheese and pate (plus left over turkey, although OP won’t have that) and serve with salad.

On the 27th this year we’ll be doing Beef Wellington as will be the final day of our Christmas bubble. We’d usually do it nearer New Year. Will serve with cauliflower cheese and red cabbage, so very different to Turkey dinner on the 25th. A nice Christmas ham would be an alternative - done with different veg/sides to Christmas Day it will be a very different meal.

Maraki · 01/12/2020 22:34

We always crave something light on the days after Christmas and we usually do Rick Stein’s Vietnamese Turkey salad:
beebrecipes.co.uk/recipe/turkeysaladwithchine_92947
With a quiche, a potato salad and a pasta salad for DD.
Nice fruit platter and cheese platter for dessert, nobody wants anything too heavy.

Alternatively, seafood lasagne and green salad or honey glazed roast salmon.

I couldn’t face more meat or heavy food after Christmas.

Hohomerryxmas · 02/12/2020 04:15

We have left over roast dinner on boxing day lunchtime but its optional and I always have something else on offer, I think last year I made ham, chips and egg for anyone who didn't want another full on roast. In the evening its always been cold meats, bread, pickles, cheese, chutneys, pate, crackers, hummus, veggie sticks, crisps and dips.
On the 27th I make a left over Christmas pie, left over meat and veggies goes into it and we have it with chips and gravy.

Hohomerryxmas · 02/12/2020 04:30

Posted to soon! On the years I've eaten christmas dinner elsewhere and not cooked I've still always cooked some meats for us regardless so we had some for 'leftovers' so I could have some meat for cold meats, sandwiches, curries and pies. Last year we had hog roast, ham and duck. Cause I didn't cook christmas dinner I decided to leave out the turkey

ShaunaTheSheep · 02/12/2020 04:32

Easy comfort food as those days usually revolve around sporting fixtures, so may rethink the menu this year:

Christmas ham, fried egg and chips
Cottage pie, peas and ketchup
Turkey curry, made Delia style with sultanas and curry powder

And probably the trifle and Yule log that didn't get touched in Christmas Day because we were stuffed.

ShaunaTheSheep · 02/12/2020 04:34

Another favourite is pulled pork in the slow cooker

Or lamb kleftiko.

sergeilavrov · 02/12/2020 04:40

We do Oxtail Stew with Confit of Garlic Mash and Broccolini for Christmas Eve; Argentine grill for Boxing Day with cheesy potatoes we had there a few years ago and a few bottles of really decent Malbec; Lobster Risotto for the 27th as we are all ready for a lighter meal by that point. I’ve gone even more overboard than usual of chocolates and mince pies this year, so that will help fill everyone up between meals!

AdaColeman · 02/12/2020 05:32

Baked gammon served with colcannon and parsley sauce would be something different for Boxing Day.
For the 27th perhaps a lamb tagine with Moroccan flavours, you could serve it with cous-cous and some simple salads.
