F***** off about my Christmas Tree šŸŽ„

Hi all

So I’m a big kid at heart and get more excited about Xmas than my kids.
One of my big things is the Xmas tree. I have an artificial tree which is prelit.

Anyway, I have a through lounge with double doors in the middle of the lounge. I put the tree up along the middle (to the side) as this is the only space I can make vacant.
There is no plug point so I fed the wire through the opening gap of the double doors and all was well.
But then last night, I stupidly slammed the door shut which had the tree lights go off. I assumed I’d accidentally pulled out the plug but no I’ve actually managed to cut one (of the two) wires in two.
I’m so angry at myself for not being careful especially since I love the tree, it’s expensive and Only had it a few years.
I could see the copper wires on both of the cut ends and tried to salvage it and was mildly pleased to see that when I joined the wires, it did actually light up. I somehow managed to keep it lit by sellotaping both of the broken ends. It’s now shining (in all its glory) but it did flicker off when my son walked nearby (obviously he accidentally touched it).
The sellotape clearly isn’t a viable long term solution, so is there any way I can get this fixed?! Or am I to throw it out and get myself another even though we really cannot afford it at the moment.

Please share your suggestions!
Thank you

You need electrical tape, this is literally what it's is for! Alternatively Sugru mouldable glue would be a slightly more sturdy solution.

Electrical tape.

Available in any diy shop but I would unplug it until you had got it sorted. You really don’t want anyone getting a shock or starting a fire.

Firstly if you use tape, always use electrical tape, then I'd recommend a terminal box that can be used to join wire to wire.

StrawberryPi · 30/11/2020 17:15

It would be best to unplug the lights, strip back about a cm of cute from each side, twist them together and then cover with the electrical/insulation tape or other suitable alternative Smile

Proper electrical insulation tape instead of sellotape.

SmileyClare · 30/11/2020 17:16

An electrician could fix that by putting a new cable on from tree to plug. Hopefully you're friends with one (?) as its a small job.

It is dangerous to leave the wires exposed, although your efforts to fix it are admirable, I wouldn't leave it like that.
It's fixable though.

I know nothing about electrics, but we have a surge protector which stops DH electrocuting himself by cutting the lawn mower cable. Would it be a good idea for the OP to use one for these lights, just in case?

movingonup20 · 30/11/2020 17:27

Electrical tape is designed for this! Any hardware store has it

Bunnybigears · 30/11/2020 17:30

Yes to the electrical tape but well done for fixing it yourself.

BoxBird · 30/11/2020 17:38

Ah thank you so much! I had no idea such a thing as electrical tape exists!

Thank you all for your responses. Will buy asap.

Please do unplug the tree until the flex is properly mended, @BoxBird - it is a fire hazard at the moment.
