Book suggestions for teen boy

DS (14) loves to read, but has read a lot, and I'm looking for suggestions of stuff he might like. He's enjoyed Mortal Engines, pretty much all of Rick Riordan, Hunger Games, Chaos Walking series etc.

When I was his age I read a lot of classic sci fi, but he doesn't seem to be so interested. What do your bookish boys enjoy? Thanks Xmas Smile

Lord of the rings
The hobbit
Wheel of time series
Terry patchett discworld books
Gormenghast trilogy

AlwaysLatte · 30/11/2020 16:13

My son likes the Alex Rider series

WellTidy · 30/11/2020 16:17

What about the Philip Pullman His Dark Materials trilogy?

Game of Thrones - a seven parter

But my best suggestion would be the Christopher Paolini books for teens (but maybe not The Fork, the Witch and the [something or other] as that's popular with boys who are more like 11yo and your Ds sounds like a strong reader)

What about some George Orwell - 1984/Animal Farm...depending on what GCSE Lit texts are he might like Lord of the Flies, Frankenstein or Jekyll and Hyde. Also the new Phillip Pullman Book of Dust series if he’s read the first trilogy, Malorie Blackman - Boys don’t cry, Orangeboy Patrice Lawrence and The Book Thief. Colton Whitehead - Underground Railroad and Nickel Boys - all well liked by Year 9/10 boys I teach.

It maybe worth checking out which services your local area is offering. In our area the librarians are asking parents to bring up with a list of books your child enjoys and they are selecting books for child to borrow.

Time Riders by Alex Scarrow).

User27aw · 30/11/2020 16:41

Ive bought my 15 year old
The Ant and Bea mysteries series by Rachel Ward.
One of us is lying by Karen Mcmanus

My 12 year old The Bodyguard series by Chris Bradbury

My boy likes lots of manga - girl from the other side, witch hat atelier, next life I want to be a villainess. That's off the top of my head - may have got some wrong. He also has read some books after watching the Gibli anime of them - Howl's moving castle, When Marnie was there (here?) etc

For Christmas I have got him Amnesia clinic and Big ideas for curious minds.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 30/11/2020 16:50

Thanks all, some good suggestions.

He's read LOTR, Alex Rider, 1984 and Animal Farm. Tried first of His Dark Materials but didn't get any further (DD is loving them tho, possibly because she identifies with Lyra?)

@AlwaysLatte that Michael Grant series looks like just his sort of thing, thank you. And he's read Noughts and Crosses series, so I will check out that Malorie Blackman, thanks @SarBear1980

I like the look of Christopher Paolini @WellTidy

I also thought about contacting the school librarian @Thatwentbadly as DS can't go there at the moment (cos covid) he used to go after school or at lunchtimes, but it's now verboten.

Ready Player One ?

RedskyAtnight · 30/11/2020 16:57

Can I caveat the Gone series? I think they are very dark and quite brutal at times, and I'd be hesitant about giving them to a child under 16 (I found some parts really horrific). You might want to read them yourself first, or at least some comprehensive reviews - and also bear in mind that the books get progressively worse (in terms of content) as they go along.

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/11/2020 20:09

Anything by Darren Shan
The Extinction Games

PhilODox · 01/12/2020 16:53

What about Philip Reeve Railhead series.
Or Alastair Reynolds' Revenger series.

Mumski45 · 01/12/2020 17:55

I have 2 teenage boys who have read the Gone series and yes they are quite brutal but quite appropriate for 12-14 year olds unless they are particularly sensitive. Michael Grant visited their secondary school and spoke to year 7 and 8 boys so this is the right age group.

Not sure if it's already been suggested but also look at the cherub series by Robert Muchamore. Another set that I have read myself and enjoyed but not for the faint hearted. Eg my 11 year old had to ask me what a 'hooker' was so be prepared for this type of question from a younger audience.

UnlimitedUnspecific · 01/12/2020 19:00

The zombie series by Charlie Higson - Enemy.
Does his like war books? Paul Dowswell older kids books are good - maybe still too young though.

This has been a great thread for ideas - thank you all (I knew MN would be able to help out!). Hope it's helpful for others too Smile
