Gift for 60-70 yr old woman?

I'd like to get a friend of the family a nice gift this year. She's really Dm's friend and usually I'd just get her a card, but she's been really helpful while DM has been ill and we've become close.
Here's my "issues"

  • She's diabetic and vegetarian, so I wouldn't feel comfortable choosing a food hamper/cheese board type gift, in case I get it wrong.
-She likes red wine, but usually only on a Scrabble and wine night with DM and she won't be up for that for a while. -She's very young at heart, I don't think she'd appreciate anything like slippers or a nice blanket (though saying that I would at forty years younger Grin ) -Doesn't drive and neither do I, so a payed for day out wouldn't be do-able

She's recently retired and says she's enjoying revisiting her hippy side. Likes art. Is a strong feminist.
I'm thinking maybe a mix of a good book, nice candle and a mug, one with a hand-painted animal on it?

If you have any suggestions for these things, or a different suggestion I'd really appreciate it. Tia.

Neom organics have gorgeous candles (& gift sets) & John Lewis has Black Friday deals at the moment.

What's your budget?

Not a mug - she's probably got loads already.

Agree that the Neom candles are really lovely. Maybe one of those, a lovely sketch book and some sketching pencils and/or pastels or charcoal?

Does she like candles? I'm almost that age and wouldn't thank you for one. Books: Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez or Difficult Women by Helen Lewis.

I am 76 and I love a nice fleece blanket, brandy liqueurs, mini Prosecco, a new book (The latest Nora Roberts maybe) a poinsettia is always a nice Christmas present too.

W2020 · 29/11/2020 18:57

Those Neom candles do look lovely, especially the Christmas wish one. But you have a point WonderDog, I don't actually know if she does like them. I've never been to her house personally so can't say.

Argh, thought the mug was a good idea groupie. I'll rethink that too. Sketch book is a nice idea, but I should have said she likes looking at art, visiting gallery's and such. Not an artist herself.

No real budget, she deserves to be spoilt, if there's something worth the money.

Thank you @thegreylady, I might go have a look at some nice blankets

I wonder if she’d like Self Portrait by Celia Paul (amazon.co.uk/Self-Portrait-Celia-Paul/dp/1787331849/)? She was Lucien Freud’s lover, but also an artist in her own right, and it’s been really well-reviewed (although I haven’t read it; it’s just sitting on my wish list!)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/11/2020 19:09

Not a blanket! It seems such an odd present.

Cashmere wrist warmers?

Books are tricky because you don't know what she's read already. Having said that, this is a really good little book about art.

W2020 · 29/11/2020 19:13

Oh dear. It might be better to just ask her what she'd like, though I would like to surprise her.

@W2020, I was on my phone earlier and was a bit too succinct. What I meant was, I would thank you for anything you were kind enough to give me, profusely, because it's lovely to be remembered and appreciated, but I personally have never seen the appeal of scented candles (possibly unusually, these days) so would be just a bit disappointed to get one as a present. So what I was suggesting was to check that your friend does like them.

I would love a beautiful bouquet of flowers or an interesting houseplant or a planter of bulbs.

What about membership of The Art Fund, if she likes going to galleries? As long as she can reach a good range by public transport, it would give her the chance to get into a range of exhibitions, assuming there are some next year. Possibly a better present for another year, though!

Cinema tokens?

I am in that age bracket and I would love this:

www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Electronic-Diffuser/p/ARDED

Then she can buy the fragrances she would like.
