First Christmas alone

Ekajati · 28/11/2020 19:29

This is my first Christmas alone, usually I always go abroad to see my family (I don't have any near me) but thanks to COVID and related factors I decided it was too complicated and dangerous to do that this time. I'm not very domesticated (not much reason to be so far) and so was hoping I could find a Christmas meal delivery, and no luck so far. I could make a meal myself but would rather not try to cheer up packaged turkey slices... does anyone have any ideas/pointers? Does anywhere do ready roasted Turkey in small quantities that is better than packaged slices? Thanks!

I don't have any specifics but round our way lots of farms and grocers do Xmas boxes. Meat and veg and trimmings and pudding all together. Defiantly check out independent suppliers.

The alternative is just to eat some really delicious stuff that not particularly Christmassy. Lots of restaurants will be delivering DIY boxes until the 24th

HeyMicky · 28/11/2020 19:43

*Definitely

Don't defiantly check anyone out

CloudyVanilla · 28/11/2020 19:43

OP Tesco are also doing a meal for two which would be better than large quantities.

Alternatively, get some prepped roasts and veg, the smallest pack of pigs in blankets and box of stuffing you can find, and a turkey joint. Most places definitely do ones that serve 2 people. As a last resort you can get a lovely roast chicken crown.

Hope you have a lovely day xx

Rather than tying to do a traditional Christmas meal, why not just have your very favourite thing?

MotherPiglet · 28/11/2020 19:47

Check out local hotels and restaurants that normally open for christmas dinner, or local cafes. I've only just seen them advertising this week for a takeaway christmas dinner option. I assume they waited until this week to know what tier they will be in over Christmas. Sorry you cant be with family, I hope you still have a nice day. Merry Christmas x

MotherPiglet · 28/11/2020 19:48

Alternatively, if theres cafes that are doing takeaway meals but not open christmas day, order something the day before and then you xan just reheat at home

astridforty · 28/11/2020 19:49

Do you want a standard Christmas dinner? I’ve had a couple of Christmas days alone for various reasons and used it as an excuse to do exactly what I wanted. Special, low effort food from M&S, good book/ TV.

Hope you have a lovely day.

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/11/2020 19:49

I wouldn’t bother with a traditional roast and would eat my favourite food all day!

I would have a pan au choc for breakfast, pizza for lunch and then a curry for tea!

onyourway · 28/11/2020 19:52

Just go to M&S and buy what you fancy? Doesn't have to be Christmas dinner.

Just plan each day with a walk, a decent film, yummy food, a zoom call with friends and family and a chill time of a bath, snooze etc

Houseinthemiddle · 28/11/2020 19:52

When I was collecting my turkey from a local butcher there was an old couple having a few large turkey slices cut from the counter. Though it was a good idea if you didn't need a full bird.

Ekajati · 28/11/2020 20:01

Lots of great ideas, thanks - all the 2 people options seem to be sold out but I like the idea of going to the meat counter and getting some cut slices - I think I'll get that from waitrose, I guess they must have all the trimmings to get separately. I'm kind of sentimentally stuck on having the trad stuff so fingers crossed - partly it's for my folks so they don't feel too depressed for me! I am going to do some zooms with them. I may well have a curry somewhere along the line and very good advice about having my favourite foods!

I suspect local pubs may be doing take-away. It could be worth calling around to ask.

autumncountryleaves · 28/11/2020 20:20

How about Cote at Home? They have larger festive boxes for 4 but also single dishes you can buy, we’ve ordered from them a few times this year and the foods been lovely!

lovelemoncurd · 28/11/2020 20:22

Marks and Spencer will do something nice x

herecomesthsun · 28/11/2020 20:23

yy Marks and Spencer nice take away food in the fridge, tapas and smoked salmon and champagne and nice salads and nice juice and berries and breakfast pastries and any tidbits you fancy and of course chocolate

Pleaseaddcaffine · 28/11/2020 20:28

Posh treats from MnS and have what you want. I'd literally eat a cheese board all day long and have a big chocolaty pud because I could.
Then some posh drinks.
I bet waitrose do something fab too if you look.

Cote does look lovely, thanks - that's a contender for 24th evening meal!

I'm going on a hunt in Waitrose tomorrow as I can see things are going to get sold out - no big M&S near me but if I don't find something at Waitrose I might venture further afield. I'm thinking Waitrose for 25th lunch and either Cote or a curry (there's a good local one) for the 24th. Thanks for all the inspiration
