Mulled wine

Mulled wine isn't my favourite thing but I always enjoy it in (or outside) a bar far more than any attempts I've made at home.

On the basis that Christams this year will be largely held in the garden, what's the secret to a decent mulled wine?

Heat red wine, spices, sliced orange, sugar and orange juice very gently. Add decent slug of favourite spirit at end of heating (brandy, spiced rum, Cointreau). AIBU to want one for breakfast now?

I think I need a recipie with ratios of juice to wine and specific spices and quantities.

Good red wine! A lot of people opt for poor red wine for mulled wine but using a good bottle makes a huge difference. Definitely a good glug of brandy too. Make it in a slower cooker too if you have one. It needs to be heated low and slow

You could also try a mulled white wine or mulled gin. I've done a mulled gin the last couple of years and it's delicious.

Just buy it ready-made. Tesco do a great mulled wine, I've already commenced my evening drinkies in my special mulled wine mug!

This recipe has served me well the last few years. Waitrose mellow & fruity red at £5 a bottle works particularly nicely.

I find the ready-made supermarket stuff fine, though you need to add an extra glug of alcohol. Also Delia's mulled cider is delicious.

Another truth is, it’s only nice when it’s hot. So serve it in small glasses.

The best variation we've ever had was in Estonia, that call it glögi ,at least that's what it sounded , and it had a shot of vodka plus vodka soaked sultanas. If you're not sure about ratios then you can buy them ready made. Taste each batch that you make and categorise the taste, so thing like ,too much orange, not enough cinnamon. I find a lot of recipes are far too sweet so we add sugar to taste in the glasses.
