What are you getting the alcoholic in your life?

That isn't alcohol, I mean.

We've done Alexa, audio books, whizzy gadgets for Alexa, various home wares and now I've drawn a blank. What do you get the person who'd rather be on the sofa drinking himself to death (and may well be, this year)?

It's not exactly a light-hearted thread but it's not a pity party either, other than in a what-the-hell-to-get-for-Christmas way

Posh chocolates, obviously not liqueur ones, or proper books. I lost a friend to alcohol earlier in the year so get here you're coming from.

A red letter type activity. When my dh went through a period of true sobriety it was doing things out of the home that helped. Something thrill seeking to get the adrenaline as well as endorphins going.

HelloMellowYellow · 26/11/2020 20:06

Amazon vouchers and chocolates or sweets.

No relevant suggestions, but I found Al-Anon meetings for me helped me to find my way out of a similar situation...

RaininSummer · 26/11/2020 20:11

A cardboard coffin to decorate in between drinks?

theseriousmoonlight · 26/11/2020 20:12

Food type gifts usually. My dad doesn't eat much so picky things i know he likes. This year it's pates, chutneys and fudge.

Previously I've got him books. 'Reasons to Stay Alive' by Matt Haig was a good one as he also has depression. It also helped my mum understand how he feels.

And socks. Usually happy ones or horrendous Christmas ones

Diverseduvet · 26/11/2020 20:12

An experience? Might get him off the sofa for a bit.

Craftycorvid · 26/11/2020 20:15

Therapy? Would he consider it?

doctorhamster · 26/11/2020 20:20

The alcoholic in my life (female) doesn't really leave the house so I'm thinking a nice soft blanket to keep her warm whilst she's drinking on the sofa and maybe some nice hand cream or bath shit.

If in doubt do something food related.

ThePlantsitter · 26/11/2020 21:51

I forgot I started this thread! Sorry for not replying earlier. Some great advice, thanks. I'm not going to make myself responsible for therapy but it would be great if he would!

Sheepskin slippers

pinkksugarmouse · 28/11/2020 16:04

Counselling sessions.

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 28/11/2020 16:46

Oh God, just to say I’ve been there OP - difficult when you know they would be: bitterly resentful of not getting anything / at the same time have absolutely no interest in anything apart from drink / it feels totally pointless to buy them nice drink as they are more than happy with their secret cheap vodka hidden down the back of the sofa.
I always went with fancy picky food stuff.🤷‍♀️

Magnoliasstreet · 28/11/2020 16:58

Bettys hamper with no alcohol of course and a book which I think he’ll lkke

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 28/11/2020 17:04

Nothing. The alcoholic parent I had ruined every Christmas with their drinking.

Treat yourself to therapy....

tinkiiev · 28/11/2020 17:08

Sweets and chocolate biscuits. On the off chance that he does drink less, he will want sugar to make up the difference.

DeeandraReynolds · 28/11/2020 17:11

Experience thing, sobriety books, puzzles or games to keep hands busy, sweet treats, maybe a voucher for takeaway or one of those fancy food boxes from nice restaurants, (as long as he wouldn't then add a bottle of something alcoholic)!

2bazookas · 28/11/2020 17:34

A cheap suitcase and a bus ticket.

polkadotpixie · 28/11/2020 17:58

Some thermal under T-shirt's. He doesn't really eat anymore and is very skinny and feels the cold

Skipsurvey · 28/11/2020 18:15

almost nothing, but i relented, couple of things he has asked for related to his interests i.e guitar

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 28/11/2020 22:57

I got mine a divorce.

Sorry, probably not helpful. Hope you’re ok, and hope your Christmas is as nice as it’s possible to be Flowers
