Christmas BBQ

Apologies if this has been done.

DH would like to do a bbq this year. We are rural U.K. Close family coming (mostly open minded)!

Would love your suggestions, please.

So far, I'm thinking kebabs of turkey and pigs in blankets, served in pittas with bread sauce, thick gravy and stuffing?

Thanks 😊

Brie and cranberry sauce topped burgers. Mmm

Some really good ideas on here. Thanks 🤩. Really looking forward to it.....so long as it's not horizontal rain 🌧

I recommend getting DH an early Xmas present of a barbecue recipe book for some inspiration. My Weber one has prompted us to cook all sorts of things.

If you are doing a big bird, it might make sense to cook it the night before. We sometimes smoke or tandoori a chicken (and that can take several hours).

Also buy a temperature probe thermometer to ensure everything is cooked.

FWIW, my Aussie SiL refuses to cook meat in her oven; meat all gets roasted/grilled outdoors on the enormous barbecue.

Haha! Sounds amazing. I'm jealous Grin

What if it's cold and raining?

Neolara · 27/11/2020 19:35

My DH has cooked turkey on a BBQ (lovely South African Xmases). Apparently, they cook quicker than you think.

@AlwaysLatte

What if it's cold and raining?
It will be cold, it’s December.

DH had to BBQ under a large sunshade on year when we suddenly went from cloudless and sunny to a torrential downpour. Food was still done and served hot.

We always cook the turkey on the bbq as it then frees up the stove and oven for sides. We use a weber chicken roaster to sit the turkey up on and then the kettle pizza to make more space for the turkey (I cover the hole with tinfoil). It works well and the Turkey comes out really moist and it cooks quite fast.

I took my charcoal weber to the uk and did my turkey on it. I always cook it that way.

It’s the best way.

What with it being Thanksgiving last week, the Weber website has some hints and tips/recipes:
www.weber.com/US/en/blog/tips-techniques/how-to-cook-a-turkey-on-a-kettle/weber-29476.html

If I had people coming round, I reckon I would practice with a big chicken first (or a turkey if you can tolerate 2 in a month).

We're definitely having a bbq one day over Christmas! Fire pit, logs, mulled wine, blankets and something cool and jazzy in the background.

mbosnz · 28/11/2020 17:04

Go for it! We do one New Years Eve. . .

We've always had a barbie NYE (Kiwi) and by crikey, a little thing like it being the middle of winter and UK weather isn't going to stop us now. . .

mamakoukla · 28/11/2020 17:49

Brine the turkey then BBQ slowly. Lovely smoky flavours which work brilliantly in stock too

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 28/11/2020 18:49

I went to one on Boxing Day many years ago- was a family tradition. Was great fun. I’d put my bell tent up if I was brave enough and decorate and do this but my family are boring 😀
@missyB1 my great friends are from SA, bbq everything all year round! (but generally eat indoors during winter)

DaphneFanshaw · 28/11/2020 18:58

That sounds amazing,
I would love it.
I am sure Nigella does a Christmas coleslaw that would go really nicely with a bbq.

Jenje · 28/11/2020 19:26

What a wonderful idea - thanks for the inspiration!
