Hi

What’s the best presents for a 7 yr old autistic child (boy) ?

Lego too boring
Books not exciting
He’s got quite a few remote cars - so don’t want to buy any more
He’s got drones
He’s got a bike abs scooter

Just all he likes is playing on the computer that’s the best thing 😳

I’d love some ideas if anyone has some 😀 I hate buying for the sake of it and would love to give him an amazing couple of presents that he would enjoy 🤩 xxx

Thank you xxxx

Does he have any special interests that you could focus on?

I know a young boy about 9 with SEN & he loves shells, the Titanic & skulls/bones. I'm def not getting him a bone (dead animal/rodent bones off the farm are his favourites) so am looking for books about either the Titanic or shells.

But maybe for your gift look at the special interests he might have & think out of the ordinary. Like one year I found some string lights for his bedroom in the shape of shells

Does he have a trampoline? My dd (Asd) uses hers every day! Gravitrax? Hornby type Train set? There are also indoor gyms with swings which might be useful for sensory needs- Gorilla gym are good.

We have gravitrax - played with once !
Yes we have a trampoline.

I have a projector light for dd. It projects different things onto ceiling like space, stars, Christmas scenes etc. She loves it. Would your ds like den building- that might be something to look into. My dd has a Fitbit and that has been a surprise hit. Loves her echo dot and has helped her language cos have to give clear requests. Also bean bag to chill out on or rocking gaming chair.

Or if computers is the way to interest him a raspberry pi or something to learn coding, stop motion animation etc...

We're in the same situation with my 9 year old dd with ASD. She's not really into much. She likes bouncing on her bed at the moment but won't go out on her trampoline, so I've got her a giant bean bag lounger/sensory mat that looks quite fun.
I bloody hope she likes it because it's 5ft by 5ft, so not the easiest thing to just out away. Grin

It's on Amazon.

At that age my asd son loved his egg chair from IKEA.

OP is this your child? I don't mean to be preachy & please don't take this the wrong way but it really does depend on the child in question. The projector light or trampoline mentioned upthread would have sent my DS into sensory overload & he would have felt completely overwhelmed. He did/does however love Lego. I know you say it's boring but he would spend hours playing with it and his imaginary games were epic to watch. It also means other people can join in - certainly with the building aspect - without the child feeling overwhelmed because the emphasis is on the project in hand rather than on interaction with each other. DS is 20 now. He'll still be getting Lego this year (amongst other things!)!

My boy has autism and he loves
Kinetic sand
Play doh
The sensory boxes on amazon (fidget type stuf)
Slime if you don’t mind the mess
Bubble machines/guns
Sensory socks (a massive blanket sized sock that the child can climb in)

Lisamac1988 · 25/11/2020 12:31

anything like a bike, scooter, pogo stick too

Ilovechoc12 · 25/11/2020 12:40

Yes he’s my child.

I love the egg chair as he still in the summer used to pull the pram cover all the way down to cover him up ... to make him feel secure.

Lego he’s got a full box of it and multiple unopened packets of kits - just not so exciting to him.

Actual board games are fine until he’s not winning and then it’s game over and ruins the game for others.

We have been doing code combat on the computer to code which he loves :-)

The mat looks good too ! But yes it’s rather large if they don’t like it 😳 fingers crossed 4 u.

The trampoline we have a big one in the garden 14 foot or something which he’s reluctant to go out. Prefers to bounce on my sofas 😳 from one sofa to the other especially in this weather although I do tell him not to jump on them

Thank you for the suggestions - hard to think of stuff but some good ideas thank u x

Both my DD’s have ASD but a bit older, big hits have been..

Marble run (upgrading to gravitrax this year)
Rubix cube
Kenetic sand (still playing with this)
Meccano
Knex roller coaster

My dd won’t play board games as she doesn’t like losing but you can get one player games such as ‘rush hour’ and I have bought dd a colour cube sudoku which she will love.

Dd2’s best thing ever (what she carries around everywhere with her) is a scientific calculator 🤣

Alakazam8 · 25/11/2020 15:43

How about a mini trampoline for inside in cold weather in that case. Pogo stick, if he likes jumping. With my dd I have to do most things with her otherwise she would only do 2 or 3 things and never vary it!

Alakazam8 · 25/11/2020 15:46

He would probably like a bed tent if hasn’t got one yet, similar to cover on pushchair..
