I started buying Christmas presents for my parents and grandparents around start of secondary school age - nothing that expensive eg a tube of body shop bath pearls or a 7" single !! (Showing my age!!) - although I don't remember my younger siblings ever doing this ...-just wondering what age kids 'these days' do this - my oldest is 14 and doesn't and I feel she should by now ? She gets an allowance of £20 (we buy all her clothes etc so this money is just for treats)
What's the mumsnet consensus on this ?

My kids start choosing a gift for me and Dh from around age 3, when they can choose something small in a shop- we have had some random things but it's very sweet! We do the same for our birthdays. It's usually a max budget of £10, more often around £5 max. As they get older they'll be encouraged to choose each other gifts too, but we will continue to pay for the gifts.

DS (almost 12) has started this year, we chose the presents for his dad and his sister, and he contributed to a "bigger" present for me from him and DH. He gets £5/week and wanted to get gifts for all of us.

@missmouse101 it’s not really the point of wasting their money, it’s more teaching them the act of generosity and making people you love smile by being thoughtful IMO

When mine were 8 when we gave them 15 quid each and they had to spend 5 pounds each on mum, dad and their sibling. Usually in Tiger. My DH is rubbish at choosing gifts his theme has always been 'that'll do'.

They were told to think about what the person likes, the budget etc. I wanted to teach them how fun it is to give. When you have bought a gift you know will like, it's so much fun.

They have done really well. And they get it.
It is fun to give. Only problem is is now they are 13 they still expect the cash. I will have to wean them off that.
