Is a 2 year old too young for a fancy dress box?

Hi there,

I wanted to do a fancy dress hamper for my 2 year old god-daughter.. too young? She does a lot of imaginary play... so was thinking may be good?

Clippy cloppy shoes are a childhood essential imo!!

Hats and capes can be kept for a while. 2 year olds may struggle with dressing with fiddly clothing.

Juniperandrage · 20/11/2020 21:35

No, even if she doesn't really "get" it yet she will still enjoy it. My 20 month old loves wandering around with random bits of clothing on her head!

reluctantbrit · 20/11/2020 21:39

I think it depends on the child. DD was 3 when she got an outfit and wasn’t interested at all while some of her friends played and dressed up from 2 onwards.

Even if she is not using props a lot now, they will come in handy at one point.

No! Go for it in all it's glory

My 2 year old dd absolutely loves dressing up, princess dresses & fairies in particular but also loves any kind of hat/prop! Plays at being a witch & doctor a lot too.
Think depends on the kid & their imagination

Brilliant idea. Mine loved the Melissa and doug police and doctors sets. They are still used years later by friends dc when they visit.

We got our DD some wings at that age. Only problem was, she thought they would actually work! Grin

Perfect age to start one.

It's a great age. My son is nearly 3 and he absolutely loves dressing up and has done for a good while. He's been flying round the house in his Owlette costume all morning.

GenericUsername101 · 21/11/2020 07:43

Not too young, but good advice above about avoiding fiddly outfits. My just turned 3yo has had one for a while and loves it but it's mostly hats, capes, and random props (eg hand bags, doctors kit, apron, belts, oven gloves, sheet for being a ghost.....).

TheSockMonster · 21/11/2020 08:21

Year 2 at school or 2 years old?

Both ages should love it, but I’d tend towards individual easy to put on/take off items like hats, stethoscope, pull up tutu skirt, cloak, etc if younger.

TheSockMonster · 21/11/2020 08:22

Sorry - can see you clearly stated 2 years old. Don’t know how I missed that Blush

I wouldn’t be doing chippy choppy shoes for a child I didn’t live with, thinking about their feet and their neighbours. I’d be thinking nice soft dinosaur feet. And pirate hats eye patches etc. but no hard swords.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/11/2020 08:41

My Gdd adored dressing up clothes even at 2, esp. princess or fairy-type dresses. And yet her DM (my dd) was the most un-girly girl imaginable.

justilou1 · 21/11/2020 08:51

I had one for my DD for when I was bf twins. It had all kinds of easy to put on things like hats, tiaras, magic wands, mittens, coats, tutus, old shoes of mine, handbags... She loved it.

BabyCJuly · 21/11/2020 09:15

Thank you so much!!! I’ve ordered lots of little bits and bobs!

Pink cape with her initial on it and mask
A crown
Wand
Fairy wings
Lady bird wings
And a few other bits and all came to £30!

Thank you very much all! ❤️

Try to get a little hi-vis jacket... Relatively cheap and very versatile. (And useful on dark nights!) And hats.
