What are you buying elderly relatives?

I need to buy something for my grandmother, she’s 94, lives on her own, only goes out once a week when my aunt takes her shopping. She usually gets gifted so much food that she ends up giving it away so I don’t want to gift any food. I haven’t got a huge budget, maybe £10-£15, she has fluffy blankets, heated blankets etc..

The really posh soap is a lovely idea. I would love that! Bon Marche do some super soft knitwear in a range of colours.

Lovemusic33 · 20/11/2020 19:17

@Pansypath

Has she got a good sense of humour? Maybe a funny gift like a fart machine? Or one of those solar powered dancing Queens
She has a wicked sense of humour so something fun would be great, or if there’s a calendar containing half naked rugby players she would be very happy.

Cosmetics are a no go as she has a skin condition so I wouldn’t want to get it wrong, same with perfume. She doesn’t really wear jewellery other than a simple necklace.

I did one year do a plant hamper for the oldies Wink, got a crate from hobbycraft and then got outdoor plants from the garden centre. There's a plant called the Christmas rose - think a Mnetter suggested it, so I'll pass it on, you could get something planted already in a tub ?

Try landsend if you filter cardigans and jumpers some bargains when you look for price low-high, obviously depending on size.

My parents are the same, tricky to buy for. I've bought things like Reed diffusers, but they don't even try them out to dislike them. I have no idea this year and I'm putting it off.

Amazon have a naked rugby players 2021 calendar for £12.99

I'm giving my mother in law, about 86, a big bunch of Christmas flowers. She doesn't need anything, has plenty of photos (I also give them a photo calendar of the kids) and has been isolating more or less continuously as she has health issues.

FusionChefGeoff · 20/11/2020 22:31

By 94 most people have got enough stuff and consumables would be my suggestion.

Do you live close enough to deliver a lovely bunch of flowers??

Hairyfairy01 · 20/11/2020 22:38

A photo album / book of lots of family pictures? A book of an area that interests her, often you can get 'the history of Portsmouth picture book' type of thing. Perfume. House plant. Nice photo in a frame. Decent slippers. Nice cushion. Vase. Face creams. Hand creams. Alcohol. Ornament. Nail polish. Jewellery. Writing set. Nice pen. Purse. Mug. Hairbrush. Scarf. Nightie.

@PoulePouletteEternellement I'm thinking of my 91 year old grandma and what she would like! She's not savvy with the internet, tv etc. She loves jigsaws. I'm talking from experience and trying to be helpful.

Why the F is Mumsnet full of such rude and condescending people?? Honestly what have you just gained from being a keyboard warrior?? A kick out of putting someone down...

Mrsmadevans · 20/11/2020 22:50

@Laufeythejust

Mine has a perfume she adores and can only be sourced online now. Sadly it’s becoming harder and harder to get hold of so I’m bulk buying this year to last me a few more years. I’ve also bought her a lovely blanket from cozeehome, she gets a bit cold sat in her chair and this should keep her cozy! I’ve got her it in a bright colour as she hates it when things match!
That's so lovely of you 😊 Can l please know the name of the perfume , my Mum is 89 and l think it sounds like the scent she would like too thank you 😊
TrickyD · 20/11/2020 22:55

Though a relatively youthful 76 year old, I would think my family were off their heads if they gave me a subscription to People's Friend or Take a Break. I would prefer Private Eye, thank you.

Ignore her ktsc89. Few people have the budget to buy ipads/Georg Jensen etc. for people, no matter how much they love them. And hopefully those who can, have the class not to make snide comments advertising their generosity on internet forums.

My grandad is 101. I'm getting him Laurel and Hardy DVD's and wine

GreenClock · 20/11/2020 23:12

Cashmere socks, one of those bird feeders that sticks to the window. I’m 47 and I’d love those!

IndieTara · 20/11/2020 23:24

I've got my grandmother some scented coat hangers. Practical but nice. She said she needed new hangers. She also gets tons of food and flowers so I always try to avoid them.

Crunched · 20/11/2020 23:49

I have bought a thermometer/barometer that sticks to the window as my relative is pretty much housebound with the way things are at present and lives in an apartment. Alongside this, the (new in paperback) Joanna Trollope book. I have also ordered a copy of the newspaper for the day she was born. I think it will be a good talking point.

FixItUpChappie · 21/11/2020 02:49

Super soft cozy queen sized throw - I'm pretty pleased with with it Brew

haggisaggis · 21/11/2020 16:10

@Bottl thanks for the idea. Went to my local plant nursery today and they planted up a nice pot for me so that’s dd sorted!

Wimpeyspread · 21/11/2020 16:17

I’ve knitted a shawl for my 93-year old MIL - for dozing in front of the telly. If she doesn’t like it, at least I’ve tried, and it doesn’t take up much room!

unmarkedbythat · 21/11/2020 16:21

I've just realised I no longer have any elderly relatives.

My nana had such a thing for lily of the valley and loved that she got so much at xmas she didn't need to buy soap or perfume or hand cream all year... or so she said. Maybe she was just very polite :)

Lovemusic33 · 21/11/2020 16:28

Thank you for all the great ideas. She wouldn’t want me to spend a fortune so buying her a tablet would not be an option (she wouldn’t use it anyway).

She’s had her garden all grassed over as she’s unable to do gardening now, she pays someone to come and cut the grass and to prune the roses out the front.

She would probably like some cosy socks or a jumper/cardigan.

Love music I'm buying my 80 yr old mother silk pillowcase as part of her present as she usually likes a weekly 'set'and blowdry. Shes very self conscious about WhatsApping when her hair is all over the place do hoping that will help. You may be able to get one in the black friday sales for your budget.
