I’m not sending them back though as I kind of like them

They sell them all year round, I don’t think they’re meant to be Christmas. They’re pretty though!

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 19/11/2020 12:14

I'd say they were all year round lights, rather than Christmas ones.

ScrollEatSleepRepeat · 19/11/2020 12:15

They are beautiful! May I ask where they are from? I've seen similar ones in IKEA but I don't think they were as nice. Could I also ask how far down they come into the room (if that makes sense). You look like you have high ceilings, unfortunately I don't and my very tall DH bangs his head on lampshades all the time (you'd think he'd learn HmmGrin)

EachandEveryone · 19/11/2020 12:38

www.paperstarlights.com/our-company/ i love them i dont think my ceilings are that high im 5 5 and had to stretch on a chair. I hope they stay put.

They are absolutely beautiful. I want one for each room! I am definitely going to get one for Christmas. DH is just going to have to remember to walk around it (we won't talk about ChristmasPaperChainGate) Grin

We have an ancient (similar but not as nice) IKEA star lampshade which gets dragged out each year and the DC won't let me replace/change it but I might retire it to a lamp now and get one of the beautiful ones for the ceiling.

Every Swedish household is full of these at Christmas. We hang them in the windows through, rather than on the main lights

Yes, it’s a Swedish tradition (some Danes do it too). They go in the windows as shown above and really create a cosy atmosphere, especially in the evening when it’s dark outside and the lights are low inside.

I’ve ordered three this year for our windows at the front of our house, harking back to the Christmases of my childhood back home.

GinandGingerBeer · 19/11/2020 13:56

How do they light up if they're in the window?
Are they battery operated?

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 19/11/2020 14:03

You can use a battery light (or a small strand of LED fairy lights) but in Scandinavia you can buy specific light fittings on electrical cords - forget what they’re called here - that fit with the stars and plug into a socket as usual. Then you would hang that on a hook or maybe on the curtain rod.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 19/11/2020 14:06

@EachandEveryone it looks very pretty on your ceiling light. You could possibly change the lightbulb out for a dimmer one as that would probably make it more cosy and more cosiness means more Christmassy feels. Xmas Smile

livingthegoodlife · 19/11/2020 14:17

IKEA also sell the special light bulb holder and socket.

In Sweden I think every window has one! All in white lights. Looks very pretty and effective in the winter.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 19/11/2020 14:19

It really does. And it brings a wonderful sense of togetherness and a feeling of peace and goodwill to all, when you see all the stars and candles in all the windows. Xmas Grin

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 19/11/2020 14:20

Oh grrr that was meant to be a peaceful, happy smile - not a vaguely sarcastic looking grin!!

Hiccupiscal · 19/11/2020 14:24

They're beautiful op,

And I absolutely love PP telling us about putting them in windows, I'm not considering buying a couple for my house!

TheCrow · 19/11/2020 14:29

The pound shop had these in today, not sure if they'd be big enough to hang on the light but nice for the window? They had lots of battery operated lights that could maybe go inside too

EachandEveryone · 19/11/2020 14:30

I will find some cheap ones for my windows but i am in a flat in London amd I can promise you no one down my street will be doing anything remotely Christmassy.

Thankyou for the info re the bulbs @HollyandIvyandallthingsYule & @livingthegoodlife

Concestor · 20/11/2020 17:04

I have one in my dining room window at Christmas but it bothers me that they hang upside down, surely usually you draw a star with the point at the top?

Cocolapew · 20/11/2020 17:07

Ohh I love them 🤩

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 20/11/2020 17:10

No, that’s definitely the correct way for it to hang. Stars of that type are often drawn with a longer point at the bottom as well (not only in Scandinavia), so I guess it just depends whether you’ve seen it before or not.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 20/11/2020 17:17

Mind you I’m referring to the one in the photo with the candelabra. Looking at some others, yes, it does kind of depend on the star itself - some are maybe not configurated quite right so it looks a bit wrong.

Possibly one reason it might be pictured more often with a single point upwards is that with two ‘horns,’ as it were, it could be seen to be a satanic star (only guessing from what vague knowledge I’ve got - haven’t actually looked it up to fact check). I’m quite sure the star with two points upwards is an old pagan symbol, though. Maybe a goat? I’ll have to do a bit of research now and check!

In any case I’m sure your star looks lovely in your window! I’m excited to receive mine so I can put them up...dispatch has been delayed as one item in the order has not yet been supplied.

thelegohooverer · 20/11/2020 17:40

I think they’re lovely OP, maybe not Christmassy by themselves but if you add more decorations they will.
I like to layer up decor this time of year so it becomes more distinctly wintry and then all twinkly at Christmas, but there are still elements of winter that stay out when we pack Christmas away. It takes the bleakness off January. I think your stars are a bit like that.
