Small Toys

Help needed, please.

We've picked up a tag to buy a present for a child in need.

He's 8 and has asked for "small toys". I've no idea what 8 year olds are in to!

Lego or some kind of robot toy. The entertainer often has good offers & you can filter by age range.

sapnupuas · 18/11/2020 15:03

Oooh. Lego. Why didn't I think of Lego!

Thank you!

He probably means little figures and models and vehicles I'd have thought. Like schleich animals and those hot wheel cars and little people to act things out with.

mam0918 · 18/11/2020 19:33

small made me think polly pocket but not popular with boys really

NeutralJanet · 18/11/2020 19:34

My friend's DS likes those little collectable Roblox figures.

TheLastStarfighter · 18/11/2020 20:38

Slightly off topic, but where can you do this? We always used to buy for Cash for Kids but were put off since the scandal. I would really love to buy knowing the gifts were going to specific children rather than just into a charity pot.

I'd think along the lines of plastic figures too, a multipack of small superhero figures or Roblox or something would be a safe bet. Or what about those Toobs mini toys? They have themes like space/pirates/animals.

Or what about Playmobil? That would be ideal for the age.

Thank you, everyone.

I've a four year old who loves everything and a 10 year old nephew who only likes gaming, so no help!

The boy has asked for art materials, family games, Christmas treats and small toys. This is what I've bought so far.

@TheLastStarfighter my local Dunelm is doing it.

Superhero figures?

MiniMileyMoo · 19/11/2020 21:29

Ah that's lovely. I'd get some art bits from eg The Works (proper sketch pads and grown up style pencils and brushes cheaply) and my 8 year old loves Sharpie style pens. Family games maybe a card game like exploding kittens? And small toys I'd say are stocking filler type items, maybe something like slime, Lego minifigure, whoopee cushion/joke things, my DS likes spy gear (eg spy pens, spy glasses). There's a recent thread on 'stocking fillers for 8 year olds' so have a look there!

TheLastStarfighter · 19/11/2020 21:32

Thanks @sapnupuas. I did some asking around and the local church is doing similar, so I have started some extra shopping Smile

TicTacTwo · 19/11/2020 21:39

I think blind packs of mini figures could be the ticket here. They are pricy for what they are but YouTubers often open them in videos.

I would choose Roblox, Lego or Minecraft as possible themes.

spacegirl86 · 19/11/2020 21:54

This is a lovely idea. Our local dunelm I believe is doing it. My sil is getting a gift for an 80yo called Doris! I shall have to pop in when we can.

How about sciencey things like slime in a pot etc?

sapnupuas · 20/11/2020 09:04

I'd have loved to buy for Doris but my son overheard me mentioning it to my husband and was adamant he wanted to buy for another child.

Thank you for all the help. I thought it was a relatively simple list until I realised I've no clue what 8 year olds like!

I've just bought Uno and a K'Nex set. My mum is in charge of art stuff.

She's thinking a colouring book but is that too young for 8?

Could be way off the mark but id have interpreted 'small toys' as either not wanting to be greedy, or perhaps not having much space/a permanent home, rather than meaning any specific type of toy.

sapnupuas · 20/11/2020 13:50

@SpamIAm

Possibly - but I'm still not sure what boys are in to.

OP posts:
TicTacTwo · 20/11/2020 14:47

What about an annual? Typical 8yo boy would probably like Minecraft or Roblox

PinkJam · 20/11/2020 21:56

@SpamIAm I thought the same. So maybe aim for small figures that he can easily store and or stuff that comes in it’s own case etc. I think buying the K’Nex set was a good idea.

Smyths have some good small figures, superhero’s etc.

Ah, that's really nice! I might try and do that next year as my DC would like to buy for a DC and the wish list makes it more personal. We usually do bags for the homeless - one male, one female. So far we have got a toiletry bag with toothpaste, toothbrush, shower gel, hand sanitiser, hand cream and lipsil. A fleece blanket and gloves. Will also get a puzzle book and pen. Then the DC will buy the bit they like the most - selection boxes, biscuits and sweets!
