Board game for the adults

I’m looking to get a game for the grown-ups to play at Christmas, once the kids are asleep. We already have Scrabble, Risk, Cluedo, Monopoly, Mega Deal, Rummikub, traditional games (chess, backgammon etc.).

DH loves Risk, so potentially something along those lines. We also really enjoy playing TTR First Journeys with our son. So:

  1. What other games might we enjoy?

  2. would it be worth buying a ‘proper’ TTR game, and if so, which one?

TIA

Pandemic (may be too close to reality though!)

ritzbiscuits · 18/11/2020 08:46

I've seen lots of people raving about Pandemic - but it's whether or not you fancy that at Christmas!

Ticket to ride.

Ticket to Ride Europe
Settlers of Catan (also a classic but not on your list so assume you don’t have it!)

AnneOfCleavage · 18/11/2020 08:52

Sorry pressed too soon. We have the American / Canada TTR version but have also played the Europe version too. Both excellent but have slightly different rules (Europe one you have to have a long route and two short but American one you can have any three).

You have to know the people well and know they are not offended easily but Cards against humanity can be fun.

myhobbyisouting · 18/11/2020 09:20

We like exploding kittens, intending to try pandemic when we can get a deal on it.

Cards against humanity was boring. I didn't get it, neither entertained nor offended. Weird game Grin

Equimum · 18/11/2020 09:23

Thanks everyone.

AnneOfCleavage would you recommend one over the others? (Love your name BtW).

So, based on this, I think I’ll start by looking at Pandemic and Catan. We may have DILa for Christmas, and I’m not sure I could cope with CAH with them!

Another vote for Settlers of Catan. Can I suggest playing it beforehand, so you know how it works, and can explain it to other people?

Isle of Skye is another suggestion (up to 5 players). The website Boardgamegeek is great for reviews and more ideas.

Otherwise, if you have cards, Prediction Whist can be a giggle. Or Consequences?

Three of our favourites:

Carcassonne
Sequence
Scotland Yard

marmitecake · 18/11/2020 13:59

Sequence is awesome. Definitely recommend.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 18/11/2020 14:06

Catan
Carcassone (ideally plus inn and cathedrals expansion)
Ticket to ride (Europe is best for beginners)
Lords of Waterdeep (actually I think this one is the best as it's really good with anything from 2-5 players, 6 with the expansions. And it's both easy to learn and rely interesting for experienced players)
Azul

Coop games can be a bit hit or miss depending on the group.

But given Risk is the standard pretty much any game will be better

Elsie2211 · 18/11/2020 17:21

Chameleon

Don't get got

Herd mentality

Dotinthecity · 18/11/2020 17:33

Another vote for Sequence. Rapidough is good fun and we like Upwords and Rummikub Word too.

londongirl12 · 18/11/2020 17:43

Articulate is so much fun!

Equimum · 18/11/2020 19:30

Thanks everyone.

Looks like Sequence might be another one to look at then.

Hazelnutlatteplease not a fan of spending several evenings in the same game then? I can’t say Risk is my favourite, but DH is a huge strategist and we play a lot with our neighbours (in normal times).
