Baby walker for 9 month old

NewMama20 · 16/11/2020 10:24

I'm thinking of getting my baby a Walker for Christmas (he will be 9 months old). I'm confused as some say suitable from 9 months and others say from 12 months. I prefer the wooden style to plastic but the plastic one looks more interactive. Any opinions please? What have others gone for? See links below:

The Vtech one is the most stable I've come across, the base on that wooden one looks a little short.

SpamIAm · 16/11/2020 10:33

Oh and I meant to say I wouldn't worry about ages, under 3 they're just recommended ages really, anything 3+ is likely to contain something that's a choking hazard. So they're just a guide as to what age they're likely to be suitable for.

If you want wooden, look for a brick trolley. Will be used for a couple of years.

The plastic one will drive you mad... But they are indestructible and toddlers love them. All the fisher price and vtech toys have a similar effect... Send the parents dolally while entertaining the child.

Our LO has the vtech Walker and they love it, especially the little detachable mobile phone. It's helped them move around so much and they love the music which there are 2 different themes and 2 different volume settings.

My sister got the vetch one second hand for my niece.

It’s v stable, even on their wooden floor. The noisy bit detaches and can be played with desperately, which was handy when Neice wasn’t quite crawling yet. She’s used it a fair bit while learning to walk and still plays with it now at 14 months.

It’s not anywhere near as attractive as the wooden equivalents but it does the job!

I got a wooden one from aldi to give daughtet at Christmas when she is 9mo, which is basically a copy of the Nuby one. My friend has also given me her v tech one. My baby is 6mo so we have detatched the toy as a pp said but It's so noisy and completely confusing for the child imo. They press one button and it plays a ridiculous amount of noise before they can even register what they've done to repeat it.

Wooden one all the way.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like the vetch one is the one to go for then. I do love the look of the wooden ones but guess it's more important to pick the one my little one will enjoy most! Yep all the different musical toys are definitely driving us mad! Lol We also have wooden floors so it definitely needs to be sturdy.

I'll take a look thanks. Did you buy it recently?

I bought an old fashioned type of fluffy push along dog on wheels, for Gdc1. 5 years later it’s being used by Gdc3, and has been lent out to friends in the meantime.

It’s extremely stable - and no plastic!!
Got mine from John Lewis, now out of stock, but I dare say similar available somewhere.

I love wooden toys too, but I ended up getting my DD the v tech one too. She loved it and it was used for a while :)

InDreamland · 16/11/2020 20:17

My DD has just turned 9 months and has been given the VTech one as an early Christmas present by my sister. She absolutely loves it. Gets really excited by all the music and sounds on the activity panel. I'd recommend it.

Tibtab · 16/11/2020 20:27

I got a wooden one from John Lewis, it’s nice and stable. DD is 8 months and can stand upright holding it. It’s got letter and number cubes in it which feel well made.

Mum2b2020 · 16/11/2020 23:33

@ I got it a couple of months ago now so its no longer in stock. It's a rip of of the Nuby one though.

We had a vtech one handed down to us from my sister. We have carpets and my DS went zooming with it! Apparently if you add rubber bands to the wheels it slows it down. We used it from about 8 months as DS was taking small unaided steps. He was walking by himself at 10 months at which point the Walker was used for ramming my feet and legs only! Grin

Wherearefoxssocks · 17/11/2020 10:14

I got a wooden one with bricks from Smyths. He completely refuses to walk with it but loves the bricks, so it was worth it!

PenguinErector · 17/11/2020 10:23

We were given a Vtech one for #1 which was fab but 13 years on I'm still singing the bloody puppy calling song that the phone made 🤣

#2 was given a fisher price one that was more like a little pram with a doll (joys of hand me downs!) and she loved that too, it was much quieter and was used until she was about 2.

BertieBotts · 17/11/2020 10:31

Never buy the VTech one new! There are always a million of them on FB marketplace, or one of your friends will be passing one along.

Wooden one that doubles as a truck is generally great too, both of my DC have had both - one plastic/annoying, one wooden.

DS1 had the VTech thing and an ELC truck that came with loads of building blocks - fantastic, lasted years.

DS2 had a Playskool plastic one that turns into a car. He still uses the ride on car all the time even though he's 2 and enormous. We have an ikea truck instead for the wooden one and despite the instructions being confusing (I mixed up the two modes and we could never be bothered to correct it) has been OK. I would have preferred a more solid wooden one but it does the job.

For wooden make sure they have a good position of the handle so they don't flip up and smack the toddling baby in the face. If the fulcrum is too close to the wheel this is a problem.
