Pastries for Christmas Day breakfast - how?

I've seen a couple of threads suggesting Danish pastries for Christmas Day breakfast. I'm thinking of doing it this year but just wondered what the best way is - given that you can't buy them fresh from a bakery on Christmas Day. So do you...

  1. Buy from a coffee shop the day before and reheat on Christmas Day to freshen them up
  2. Buy in advance and freeze (do Danish pastries freeze well?)
  3. Buy the part-baked kind that you cook at home (is there a good brand to go for)

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Waitrose do gorgeous frozen ones

Iseeyoulookingatme · 15/11/2020 19:47

I buy fresh ones from the bakery section of the supermarket on Christmas eve and they are fine.

@Glittertwins please can you share the recipe?

Another vote for jusrol croissants, have tried Tesco frozen ones, they are ok but jusrol are much tastier

mogtheexcellent · 15/11/2020 19:58

I'm using my bargain cinnamon bun mix from the bargains thread.

It's quite lengthy and in US measures. I'll see what I can do in the morning

Glittertwins · 15/11/2020 20:13

But it's not too difficult

Waitrose mini 12 frozen pastries 4 danish, 4 pain au chocolat and 4 croissants.

EcoCustard · 15/11/2020 20:20

Iceland & Aldi frozen croissants, pain au chocolate & pain au raisin are nice. Let them Cool for 10 mins after cooking. We live in the arse end of nowhere and they give us all a pastry fix.

I make these regularly, they are delicious sallysbakingaddiction.com/easy-cinnamon-rolls-from-scratch/

Or these if you prefer muffins

In fact, I've baked dozens of things from this blog and never had a fail, would recommend a look.

Failing that, or no time to prep the night before, M&S frozen pastries come 2nd to homemade

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 15/11/2020 20:42

Sorry, that 2nd link was supposed to be for the Nutella stuffed cinnamon sugar muffins Grin

Roo1000 · 15/11/2020 20:44

Definitely M&S frozen ones. A Christmas morning favourite!

Tumbleweed101 · 15/11/2020 21:04

Wow - didn't even know you could get these frozen! Something to add to the christmas food list!

SandysMam · 15/11/2020 21:10

Buy a couple of sheets of puff pastry.
Cut one sheet into squares. Fill some with apple sauce and a dollop of carnation caramel, and some with chopped banana, Nutella and shredded coconut. Fold over, crimp round the edges to seal then egg wash and sprinkle sugar on top.
With the other sheet, spread over with butter, cinnamon and raisins, roll into a sausage then cut into slices then brush with egg. Bake all in a medium oven for 15 minutes until golden brown. Your family will think you are an amazing master chef and the effort is minimal!

We’ve got some farm ones in the freezer, and have ordered some Iceland ones to freeze ahead of time too.

Frosty26827 · 15/11/2020 22:52

I always buy the Waitrose ones ...... absolutely superb

user68634 · 15/11/2020 23:04

We have bought the frozen ones, and we have bought them from Lidl on Christmas Eve which are fine warmed up in the oven. Buying from a coffee shop would be expensive. Bakery or Lidl better? But easier again is just to have pancakes. Either make in advance and freeze, make batter the day before, or buy the ready made from the supermarket bakery. Asda do big thick ones. We then add streaky bacon/smoked salmon/fruit and cream.
