How old is too old for Horrible Histories?

Looking for a present for my nephew, who has become interested in history recently. I was thinking of getting some Horrible Histories books, but don't know if he's too old for them? He is turning 11 and is a bright kid. I think I enjoyed the books at his age, but I am bad at judging for that age (older than my own dc). Don't want to get him something he thinks is babyish!

My 50 year old brother loves them and he doesn’t even have kids Grin

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/11/2020 12:19

I would check he hasn't already got them first.

herecomesthsun · 15/11/2020 12:21

DS 12 loves Horrible Histories still, but I got him the books when he was in Key Stage 1.

ShowOfHands · 15/11/2020 12:21

Ask his parents if has them or would like them.

I have a DD who loves history and at 11 was reading beyond horrible histories which she devoured when much younger.

AlexisIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/11/2020 12:24

I'm watching them right now with my DD7!
I enjoy them at 37!

PaulineScrambledPhones · 15/11/2020 12:25

I’m 35 and I still think they’re rad.

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 15/11/2020 12:40

I still love them (and the programme), DCs loved them a few years ago but outgrew them quite a while ago, the youngest is 11.

I think, like many things, children get too old for something then it becomes funny/cool/acceptable again at age 20 😳. So saying adults read/watch it still so an 11 year old would isn't strictly true! I'd still watch Peppa Pig but sadly that ended 10 years ago for the DCs

SocialBees · 15/11/2020 12:45

I think 11 is a bit old for these, how about Roger Lancelyn Green?

SocialBees · 15/11/2020 12:46

I have an 11yo DS btw.

RickOShay · 15/11/2020 12:48

I bought a set in lockdown for 12 yo ds. We both read them Grin
You’ve reminded me to keep going actually.

EasilyDepleted · 15/11/2020 12:51

We never had them when the DCs were younger but I bought a whole set in a charity shop for DD when she was about 13 and watching them all on youtube and she loved them. Check with the parents.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/11/2020 12:54

Not only do I enjoy them (at 42) but I am learning a lot from them!

Kanaloa · 15/11/2020 13:01

My 11yo ds loves them, and I read his all the time when he’s in bed!

InTheLongGrass · 15/11/2020 13:03

He's turning 11, so at primary? I think they would work. Reading age is 8-12.
I'm looking at the history smashers series for my 11 (nearly 12) year old because of the topics they cover. He still loves HH, but I'm not sure he'd admit it at school other than to a few close friends.

Spied · 15/11/2020 13:04

I'm getting DS 11 the Horrible Histories board game. It looks great!
DS still loves the magazines.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 15/11/2020 13:39

At DD's uni there was a Horrible Histories appreciation Society. DD is in her late 20's now and still loves the original programs (as do I). My particular favourite was the "weather" man Bob. "But not for long" has become a kind of catchphrase in our house. Grin

Fabuleuse · 15/11/2020 13:41

I was definitely still reading these at older than 11. Now 36 and I love the TV programme too!

doctorhamster · 15/11/2020 13:42

My dds read them when they were 6/7 so I would say it's a risky gift for an 11 year old.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/11/2020 13:45

OMG I thought you were going to say 30 or something 😂, and even then it still wouldn’t have been too old! I still sometimes watch the songs on YouTube when I’m idling, and I’m nearly 50.

Milicentbystander72 · 15/11/2020 13:46

I love books. My career is in books - however if you can get one, I urge a box set of the Horrible Histories BBC show.

My dd watched these when she was little. She's still enjoys them. She often cites this programme as giving her a solid base in history across a vast range of periods.
She's now applying to do history A-level. She still loves it.

So, never too old IMO!

Ilovemycat13 · 15/11/2020 13:47

We still watch it! Both DP and I are nearly 30 Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/11/2020 13:48

My 19yr old posted about it on her Instagram earlier today!

SocialBees · 15/11/2020 14:03

But I think there's a difference between still enjoying them as an old favourite, and receiving them as a birthday present.

PopsicleHustler · 15/11/2020 14:09

My son is almost 13 and still really enjoys it and learns from it too even though can be quite silly and very immature at times. But we watch the chase together and he will get a history question right and I will say wow, how do you know that, and he says from horrible history's.

thelegohooverer · 15/11/2020 15:25

Can you check with his parent? My ds was well able for the reading level at about 6, but was far too sensitive for them then. He went through his HH phase around 11.

Is there a particular historical period that has caught his attention or is it history in general?

If HH doesn’t suit, I can recommend some historical fiction.
