Christmas breakfast.. our only family time

So please, suggestions to make it lovely.

Virus's willing we will have our daughter and her boyfriend for breakfast. They've recently bought together and moved in. They will then spend the day and have dinner with his family. All this is totally fine with me.

How do I make Christmas breakfast special? I'm used to breakfast being a bit 'make do' while I cook dinner for numbers.

@38weekswithno2

I'd do the works; links, bacon, potato scone, eggs, tomatoes / mushrooms, black pudding, Morton's rolls. Huge pot of tea, fruit juice, irn bru (for anyone with a hangover) I'd also have pastries, fresh fruit & cereal incase people fancied them:
Love your Scottish breakfast there!
Cheeeeislifenow · 15/11/2020 09:42

Pancakes, stewed apples, cinnamon cream and toffee sauce, yum!!

Movinghouseatlast · 15/11/2020 09:44

Nigella has a brilliant Christmas breakfast. Strata- like a savoury bread pudding- really posh fruit salad and espresso martinis. I did it as a Boxing Day breakfast once and it was divine. I did sausages and baked beans with the Strata. It was all in the oven so no faffing but really delicious and special.

Nigellas Christmas book.is full of great ideas.

Bakeachocolatecaketoday · 15/11/2020 09:46

I would make something special, like scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, or stollen or a cinnamon buns (homemade). With champagne or liqueur coffee. No one will thank you for a "big spread" at Christmas breakfast, light and luxurious.

MsMiaWallace · 15/11/2020 09:54

What did you do for breakfast when your daughter was younger?
I would be tempted to do a nice take on this & then lots of extras like pastries etc.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 15/11/2020 11:26

@38weekswithno2 I miss Morton’s rolls as DH working from home so my supply was cut off! Blush

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 15/11/2020 11:30

Full festive table set.
Cranberry fizz.
Sourdough topped with puréed avocado, crispy bacon and poached eggs.

ScrapThatThen · 15/11/2020 11:36

I'd keep it light or they will be like in the vicar of dibley having to keep pretending they are not stuffed when presented with gorgeous food all day (and the future in laws will think you are sabotaging their full Christmas Dinner) lighthearted I'm sure you are all more easy going than this.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 15/11/2020 11:39

The main thing is to have what you all like best.

I would have fresh orange juice, excellent coffee, scrambled eggs and smoked salmon or avocado on sourdough toast, panetonne, slices of fresh pineapple and paw paw.

I’d also keep it light, a full fry up is a bit much for us personally on crimbo day. It’s heavy and there is so much more food to come. I also don’t see it as very festive to be honest.

Things like eggs, salmon, crispy bacon, pastries, lovely bakers bread, different plates, croissants etc in the middle of the table and they can help themselves.

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 15/11/2020 12:00

Wrong thread, obv!

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 15/11/2020 12:02

Ohhhh I’m so looking forward to our Christmas Day breakfast!

thelegohooverer · 15/11/2020 12:07

Definitely not a fry. It’ll only cause friction if they arrive at his dm too stuffed for lunch.

Booze at breakfast is fine if you are going to be home all day, but one of them will have to be the designated driver.

Definitely set the table- but maybe not as formally as a dinner table. I think you could have a lot of fun with this. I’m picturing white linens, wood, greenery - more rustic than formal.

justgeton · 15/11/2020 12:13

You're all brilliant!

Thank you so much. I'm off to look at Christmas toast racks... 😀

Last year I bought these and put our 2 Christmas elves in the fridge next to them with a butter knife and my kids thought they were great
I brought them out with cheese and biscuits and everyone thought they were great

Scrambled or poached eggs with smoked salmon in muffins or bagels. Not too heavy but tasty! Add bacon or ham if you want.
Obviously Buck's Fizz, good coffee or tea etc. And Christmas crackers!

EasilyDepleted · 15/11/2020 12:45

I'd go light as well, although it depends a bit what time they'll be having dinner. We'd never do a full fry-up but maybe some scrambled egg and crispy bacon would be nice.

We usually do croissants (cook from frozen), crumpets and homemade cinnamon buns (prepared the night before and allowed to prove somewhere cold overnight) with various juices and tea/coffee, we don't tend to crack open the alcohol till about 11, also depends if they are driving. Christmas tablecloth, napkins, decorations.

MrsWhites · 15/11/2020 12:47

@Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst

Yes those are the ones, I knew I’d seen them somewhere!

Duckchick · 15/11/2020 13:18

I'd go with whatever your Dad's favourite is.

I'm not very keen on a full English for breakfast anyway and find it far too meaty to have on one day with a roast. We do waffles mid morning instead, to keep us going until a mid afternoon Christmas lunch. A waffle iron is surprisingly cheap (30 pounds ish I think we paid), the batter is as quick to make as a pancake batter and it feels like an amazing treat.

Duckchick · 15/11/2020 13:19

Autocorrect error - I mean DD not Dad!

WonderMoon · 15/11/2020 13:34

A Christmas breakfast sounds lovely, what a good idea.
I would definitely decorate the table. Then I think I would do a pick and mix selection....warm croissants with jam, blueberry muffins, crispy bacon with scramble egg, smoked salmon, some posh bread/bagels, cream cheese. Some good coffee and some champers! May as well go all out.
