Xmas desserts

I have a bad feeling I asked the same last year...

What do you have if you don't like Xmas pud, those chocolate Xmas roll things or meringues. We don't have starters, I'm thinking probably roast chicken/maybe turkey (although let's face it, noone really likes turkey, it's all about the veg and sides) so I think we probably want a pudding. I think last year we had blocks of chocolate but I honestly can't remember....

We usually have sticky toffee pudding, trifle, Ben and Jerry's for the kids. I'm having tirimasu this year.

didireallysaythat · 11/11/2020 22:51

Still liking the idea of fruit in some form. I think pavlovas have meringue in them (my mother in law likes them but I've always managed to decline on some grounds - but like eating sugar cubes). It's amazing how desserts have all gone chocolatey - I can't remember my grandmother ever making anything with chocolate in it. I guess her generation could work wonders with half a dozen kinds of pastry and didn't need it. I do remember my grandfather having a block of bourneville with his evening cuppa though....

Plus with 4 people, I only need one dessert right? And that will probably last two days? I'm guessing everyone up thread is cooking for a houseful.

@didireallysaythat - our christmas pudding and chocolate pudding last a good few days. Only get 2 things as DC not keen on Christmas pudding.

My grandmother used to make chocolate mousse, millionaires shortbread and 'nun's veil' which had chocolate grated on the top. Just off the top of my head. But I agree there was more variety.

Aldi do a lemon tart which could me a nice antidote to all the chocolate!

didireallysaythat · 12/11/2020 08:10

@UndertheCedartree lemon tart is a nice idea - we don't have a local Aldi but I get a fortnightly shop online so I've got time to find a recipe - I'm guessing it's got something to do with lemons, sugar, cream, eggs and butter....

Preserved fruit in booze with a dollop of cream / greek yog / ice cream - whatever floats your boat.

I’ve also used them as a posh filling on top of puff pastry & in pre made tart cases.

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/11/2020 08:25

I love @AdaColeman idea of a selection with a glass of something.

raspberry trifle
baked cheesecake
Ice-cream bombe assembled from everyone’s favourite flavours

mam0918 · 12/11/2020 13:12

we dont bother lol

We eat starters (party platters) for breakfast after opening tree presents at around 9-10am

We have dinner probably around 4pm

Then we are always so stuffed the dessert doesnt get eaten... we buy one each year 'just in case' but it never gets eaten - who still has room after xmas dinner?

Sitt · 12/11/2020 13:14

I made this a few years ago for the non-christmas-pudding fans and it went down very well. It’s Christmassy and looks festive and is actually quite light in texture

We always have dessert and manage to fit in a small portion later in the evening but then we have it for the next day or so too.

It HAS to be sherry trifle for me, I love it and Christmas is not Christmas without it as far as I'm concerned. DD doesn't like it so I either buy or make a yule log for her (which we all eat with baileys coffee in the days after Christmas too)

If my parents are here they might have traditional Christmas pudding, they like it sliced and fried in butter, then served with cream. My aunt makes the puddings.

I could be tempted to make the pavlova mentioned up the thread this year...

kingdomcapers · 12/11/2020 13:33

Our favourite ice cream shop do fab ice cream "cakes". All ice cream though, no cake. Last year we had Rudolph, the year before we had an igloo but the kids argued about who would eat the fondant penguin. They keep checking to see when this years designs will be released.

tara66 · 12/11/2020 13:40

Have you never seen M & S's Xmas puds?

BabyMoonPie · 12/11/2020 13:44

Vienetta. Life's too short to be slaving over a pudding on Christmas Day when you should be playing with new presents, watching crappy TV and fighting over the tub of Roses

FrancisCross · 12/11/2020 13:49

M&S Pine Cones and Profiteroles in our house.

Honeywort · 12/11/2020 13:54

Was going to suggest rocky road in a Christmas pud shape or wreath shaped pavlova but see you do t like meringue or chocolate. One thing I have done in past which might work for you is a “pudding platter” ie lots of mini puds so you can have 3 or 4 different ones each - feels v special and looks great on a couple of cake stands or similar. So you could have eg a shot glass of fresh raspberries with marscapone, an egg cup of ice- cream, a tiny apple pie and a macaroon. You can make these type of puddings in advance but equally you can buy them too

SpacePug · 12/11/2020 14:37

Cheesecake or profiteroles or both 😋

GameSetMatch · 12/11/2020 19:28

A ‘cooks’ triple chocolate torte, it’s about £18 it’s frozen so can be bought in advance, they sell them in Booths.

GameSetMatch · 12/11/2020 19:30

It can be delivered too www.cookfood.net/menu/entertaining/puddings/Triple-Chocolate-Torte

didireallysaythat · 12/11/2020 20:13

@GameSetMatch - nice, if you like chocolate. But we don't...... ?

Bluntness100 · 12/11/2020 20:15

None of you like chocolate? Even the kids? That’s quite unusual

We usually do a Christmas pudding and some other thing like a Yule log.

Inextremis · 12/11/2020 20:20

I think I'm doing a butterscotch fondue with fruit and cake bits for dipping - might change my mind yet, but right now that's the plan.

Kidneybingo · 12/11/2020 20:22

Poached plums with ice cream and shortbread is nice, and still Christmassy if you spice the plums.

didireallysaythat · 12/11/2020 20:24

@Bluntness100 no we like chocolate - nice block of lindt dark chocolate in the evening after supper is great but we don't like cakes smoothered in chocolate icing, chocolat cheese cake. A Yule log is one of those giant chocolate roll things? Never had one of those - probably good if floating in custard???

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 12/11/2020 20:31

Oh now I don’t like custard so touché 😃

didireallysaythat · 12/11/2020 20:47

@Bluntness100 no!!!!! How can you not like custard?

Best dessert ever? Ice cream with custard. You heard it here first. But you probably won't like it...
