Kindle fire kids for 10 year old?

So, I'm considering some sort of device for my 10 (almost 11) year old. We have had issues previously with her watching stuff that was way too old for her (and gave her a real attitude), so she has had a break and I think it's time to try again.

I'm considering the Kindle Fire Kids, mainly because of its parental controls, but also it fits our budget better than an iPad. As well as games and videos, she will need to do home work on it (accessing websites and google classroom).

My doubt lies into whether it will be too babyish for her in terms of look of the device and content.

Anybody brought one for a child this age and been delighted?

Happy to hear thoughts.

Thanks in advance

I found it was really limited as a kids kindle. It was impossible to use for research type homework unless I logged in myself and let DD use it on the adult settings.

We have the normal kindle for both our boys. 10 and 8. We love them. U can get a larger screen now which we will upgrade to at some point

Gretchizilla · 11/11/2020 20:39

To old for one I think. I'd get a normal tablet and monitor usage.

We had one for my DS and it was an absolute pain, just didn't find it intuitive and user friendly at all. However other people rave about them! You can replace the cover with something a bit more grown up - it's just a normal kindle fire underneath - the kids version is just a different case and a subscription to the kids content, I think. When ours stopped working we replaced with an Android tablet (Huawei) which I find much easier and was about the same price, we've set up a Google family account so certain apps are blocked eg YouTube and it asks for parent approval for downloading apps and purchases, and I can set limits from my phone etc on certain apps, timings etc. (Again easier than on the Kindle fire).

You don’t have to go for an iPad, there are lots of other tablets out there that will suit her age better than a fire tablet. And with Black Friday coming up, there should hopefully be some offers.

I got my DD a normal kindle fire when she was 8, I check it regularly and she knows what she's not allowed to go on so it's not an issue.

Most kids restrictions will make it very diffictult to research the internet for homework. You will need a normal devise for it very soon.
DD got a tablet when she was 8 and ditched it when she was 11 and got a smartphone for games and YouTube. She used our laptop for homework until she got her own (she is 13 now) as she needed Word/PowerPoint for written homework. Our normal size ipad is used for Netflix/Disney+ and her phone for everything else.

I would go for a normal tablet and keep an eye on what she does. DD wasn't allowed to have it upstairs for ages.

Normal tablet and Google Family Link here to set limits and monitor usage. DC use family laptop for homework that requires Word, PowerPoint etc.

AldiAisleofCrap · 12/11/2020 01:35

No far to old, the games are for little kids.

Catflapkitkat · 12/11/2020 02:22

Mine had normal kindles at that age. You can still install parental controls. They still managed to download Minecraft and Roblox (games they played at that age). And they managed to Google and dad downloaded books etc.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 12/11/2020 02:52

They are rubbish and very babyish. I got my youngest one for his 7th Birthday, and I was surprised how limiting it was, and it broke before his 8th.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts.

Perhaps I will look at other ideas, budget is about £120 - £140 so not certain what other brand of tablets would be good at that price... we are a family of Apple users (hence my comment about iPads) but a new iPad (family's old one is too old for all the updates). So any suggestions for an android device would be appreciated.

Also, she already has a smart phone, but somehow got around what I thought were reasonable parental controls ... that's currently put away until I can trust her.... I was looking for something rock solid with regards to content.

I might start another thread asking for general Christmas present ideas ...

I'd say 10 is too old for kindle for kids. My 2 DC have had kindle fires from round age 4. The games are fantastic for younger children but doesn't appealto my 9 year old anymore, and my 8 year old has asked santa for a "grown up tablet" can you not add strict parental controls into another tablet?

DonLewis · 12/11/2020 06:31

We got a normal tablet and put all of the parental controls on. The main reason being you're not restricted to amazon's content. He can't download anything without a request being emailed to me that I have to approve.

I can't remember which one it was now, but I think it was about £140 with a case and a screen protector.

Crakeandoryx · 12/11/2020 06:46

We had kindle fires and they weren't very good. Very restrictive, slow and broke after 18 months. We're getting a standard tablet for our primary school aged children for Christmas and our older children use a laptop. We to use Microsoft family/ Google link to monitor devices.
