Does anyone decorate every room/hallway etc?

Inspired by another thread.
Usually I only tend to put decorations up in our sitting room and in the kitchen/family room where the big tree will be. I do a door wreath and some outside lights and may string some lights on the stairs.

I would love some tips and ideas please for how people decorate the rest of their houses. Does anyone do the entrance hall, landings and bedrooms? I’m even thinking about the bathrooms too!

Tinsel in hallway, light up banister, baubles hanging down, bedroom some tinsel and baubles, dc have their own trees in their head rooms. Kitchen has a few Dec's.

This year I'm going to make the hallway more grotto like.... Have more stuff hanging down.... Also decorate the front..

I decorate the living room, dining room and hallway. The only time I decorated the kitchen my DH left the hob on under a dry non-stick frying pan, and all the chains ended up festooned with black cobwebs!

That's fantastic @TrickyD !!

What is the best way to attach a Garland to a bannister without damaging it? I really want to add one to my stair rail this way but am not sure how to do it neatly

We have a very small house so unfortunately for us we really only have the living room to decorate.

Any ideas what I could do in a 1x2m porch? With no power.

I cannot wait to have a bigger house and GO CHRISTMAS MAD!!!!!!

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/11/2020 20:02

@PerditaNitt I use zip ties hidden in the foliage.

Lovely1a2b3c · 08/11/2020 20:41

We put up a garland on the bannister, a Christmas candle-light decoration in the dining room window (looking out onto the street) and in the living room we have pretty lights on the mantelpiece and another garland along a side-board. Oh and a wreath and lights outside.

I would put a mini tree on the table in the hallway but we use it so often that I don't think that it makes sense in our house. We don't have a large hallway. I have been thinking of getting a small tree for my room.

I’ve been Googling some stair garlands today. I’ve seen some lovely ones that thread along at the bottom, near the stairs, rather than on the hand rail. I’m considering this as it looks like it may be easier to keep in place?

I start next to the bottom newel post, leaving a bit of a tail, and tie the garland to the bannister rail with green string or thin green gardening wire, then leaving a loop of garland, miss out two banisters then tie on again and so on. Then cover the wire tied to the bannister rail with red ribbon and bows so it doesn't show. There are probably better ways, but not known to me, possibly involving Command Hooks.

@Hotelhelp I have the same issue. Definitely battery lights with a timer, and command hooks. I have a little string of reindeer lights that I hang as well, to add some extra. This year I am not sure what it will be.

Thank you @Howmanysleepsnow, @HintOfVintagePink, @TrickyD. I think that zip ties and some invisible wire might be the best plan. I hadn’t seen garlands that go at the bottom of the stairs, so will investigate those too. I’m probably too optimistic about keeping a stair Garland in place for a month with two small children, but I’m going to dream big...Smile

I usually only do my Living room - which amounts to mainly just the 2 fireplaces and some fairy lights round the front windows. I have a string for hanging a few cards on and some candles on my radiator cover. I also have something on the dining table. I have actually this year bought a wooden 'Merry Christmas' tea light holder for the kitchen. Not got room for anything else in there. I have also got a grey snowflake hand towel for the bathroom. The DC have Christmasy bedding on their beds. I am also planning to suprise them with a string of fairy lights and a few decorations in their room. I might put something on the fireplace in my room. I have no room for anything on the landing and no hallway. I put a wreath on the front door. I have no front garden but if I did I'd have one of those light up reindeers that moves its head!

Nearlysantatime · 09/11/2020 07:32

@2018SoFarSoGreat good ideas! I was also thinking maybe a small battery powered tree!

TrickyD · 09/11/2020 23:15

Lidl is advertising a garland with greenery and lights, 5 metres excluding plain connection cable. No idea what it is actually like but with some added greenery etc. it might make a very good basis for decorating bannisters. £11.99.

BigSisLittleSisCardboardBox · 09/11/2020 23:40

I do everywhere bar bedrooms. I have a growing set of Christmas crockery which I sub in for our usual crockery, alongside multicoloured felt type decorations and a special Christmas tablecloth. Lots of tea lights in bright glass holders . Stairs have ivy garlands which I attach by looping through hairbands and looping the hairbands round the knobs on the bannisters. I’m going for a new hallway look of pale pink as I love all those pale pink, fluffy, feathery decorations that are everywhere just now but I don’t want to get rid of the traditional red and gold in the living room. Bathroom decorations are pretty minimal - mostly tinsel and a couple of special baubles strung from door handless and cupboard doors. Don’t do bedrooms or the playroom although might go for a small fake tree in the playroom this year. Outdoors usually have a living tree decorated only with lights and a Santa stop here sign. Have been looking at light up candy canes for the garden - want to extend my garden decoration repertoire.

Pipandmum · 09/11/2020 23:46

Wreath on door, cards in hallway and a swag in living room above double doors to dining room. I have candle sconces either side of these doors and drape them in those tiny bead strings. The tree is in the dining room which has a bay window to the front. Greenery and lights and an angel on the mirror, nativity on sideboard. I have a second tree in the garden room out back. I don't do anything upstairs (kids used to have mini trees when young) or the kitchen other than Christmassy flowers. Downstairs loo gets pretty Christmas tea light holders.

micc · 10/11/2020 08:16

I just do the lounge and a few doors, we live in a flat so space is limited!

movingonup20 · 10/11/2020 08:57

No, might wrap tinsel around the odd picture frame or mirror but really just the tree
