Daughter is turning 7 the week of Xmas, she asked for some clothes ( monsoon dresses / angel face tutu which is defo more than I would usually spend on one skirt )
Her dad is in disagreement that these are Xmas presents ?
So you give your younger children clothes for Xmas ?

If she’s asked for them and her Dad isn’t going to get them for her otherwise, then yes.

PatchworkElmer · 07/11/2020 18:08

I absolutely would if she’d asked for them!

DS is 4, and will be getting a couple of (character) tops that he will love. I wouldn’t sit and make him open piles of clothes or ‘boring’ stuff though.

Belle1983 · 07/11/2020 18:11

As a kid, I used to love picking a new outfit as an xmas gift from my mums catalogue.
If she's asked for, and it sound like a more expensive treat item, then I'd say yes, buy it as a gift.

StandardLampski · 07/11/2020 18:13

Yes. My 3 years old best present last year was new pyjamas.... been mentioning it all year around... that's what he wants this year.
He has no idea what toys he received Grin

Tavannach · 07/11/2020 18:14

Is she's asked for them without prompting then probably, but I agree with her Dad. Clothes are clothes and unless things are tight they're not really Christmas presents.

BigBadBox · 07/11/2020 18:14

If asked for and/or they're 'special' clothes

reluctantbrit · 07/11/2020 18:15

Yes if it was something I wouldn’t normally buy. In DD’s case that was mainly character clothing at that age.

Any normal clothing is a necessity in my view and therefore not a gift. At least at that age, my teen may see it differently in a years time.

Fryingpan1990 · 07/11/2020 18:27

Yeh previous years she has only got a Xmas dress to wear and a birthday outfit to wear no clothes to open.

However my argument this year is she was desperate for a angel face tutu skirt (56.00 )
And monsoon dresses which I would usually buy 🤣
She also wants a pandora necklace which she can erm say goodbye to that dream this year 🤣

Generally I don't (I remember the disappointment of clothes as a child), but if they asked for them or were in some way special I would (e.g. I'm getting my kids hoodie relating to their interests this year).

TheTeenageYears · 07/11/2020 18:29

If she's asked for clothes you wouldn't normally buy then absolutely fine - the likely hood is a few years down the line Christmas & birthday presents will be either clothes or tech or money towards either of those.

BluebellsGreenbells · 07/11/2020 18:30

Clothes can be gifts

Teens here want expensive jeans for example then they have them as gifts

If you give cash, generally people buy themselves new clothes or shoes or a new coat

Perfectly acceptable

ChalkDinosaur · 07/11/2020 18:32

Definitely if its something she's asked for that you wouldn't usually buy.

Bikingbear · 07/11/2020 18:34

Yes I would buy clothes. But at the same time monsoon dresses don't sound like something that she's going to get much wear out off, esp during covid.

I'd try to hit the middle ground of she gets her very favourite and some other things.

isthistoonosy · 07/11/2020 18:35

Yep and always have, even if its normal ish they like getting new pjs and a smart shirt or dress.

RoseMartha · 07/11/2020 18:36

If my child asked for them then yes

Fryingpan1990 · 07/11/2020 18:37

@Bikingbear it’s one “ fancy party monsoon dress “ and a couple of their normal causal wear dresses.
She lives in dresses 🤣
She will not wear trousers no matter how hard I try haha.
She lives in dresses and dr martens

Yes I do. Especially if they have asked for it.

saywhatwhatnow · 07/11/2020 19:04

Yes definitely if that's what the child wants. Or if the parent asks for clothes for the child. My sister has asked for clothes for my niece and nephew from us, she knows they will get loads of toys and she's asked for next size up clothes as that's what they actually need.

Napqueen1234 · 07/11/2020 19:08

I have always given my children clothes etc for Christmas gifts. They get necessities all year but maybe a new coat or nice boots etc. I try and get ones she will like (unicorns, fairies etc) and I appreciate it’s a bit ‘boring’ but it bulks out the pile and I think it’s good to show that Father Christmas knows clothes etc are important not just toys! That’s just me though I alwyas got clothes as a gift, socks and knickers in stocking etc.

katy1213 · 07/11/2020 19:13

I would have loved a fancy, expensive dress at her age and had no interest in toys and games. But I agree that socks/knickers/pyjamas are just boring.

PTW1234 · 07/11/2020 19:14

Yeah, in fact my DS 7 just wants football kits, boots, joggers etc this year, not really into toys as much any more.

But is sports mad and would live in joggers if I let him

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/11/2020 19:22

Yes, for things like that, definitely.

She wants them, she doesn't need a £56 tutu, it's a present.

Always wrap up clothes they'll like too, also tend to spend a bit more or look harder for more special versions of needed clothes. They like the excitement of opening them, even if it's only knickers with peppy pig on them!

flower11 · 07/11/2020 19:33

Mine have always had clothes as presents to pad out the xmas pile. Both have recently had birthday, five year old had spiderman pants and batman t shirt and was happy. Dd8 got oversized hoody and dance leggings. They usually get pj and hoodie at xmas.

Brilliant she's more of a woman than me lol. Kids are funny my youngest is in shorts today. The only clothes he agreed to wearSmile

CloudyVanilla · 07/11/2020 19:57

Yes DD age 5 has asked for comfy clothes, I think she remembers Santa bringing lovely Pyjamas last year and she is like her parents in that she very much enjoys cosy and comfy things :)

My boy loves character clothes so will also get him some equivalent gifts.
