Small gift for male employee needed

I manage a small team of four women, all of whom I've known for a couple of years, and a man who was recruited in February.

I always buy my team members a small Christmas gift. Just a small token, nothing fancy or expensive. Usually costing around fiver.

Problem is, I have no idea what to get for the male team member.

I've never bought a gift for a man who was not a partner or a relative. I also don't feel as if I know him terribly well. We've been working from home and while we have a good working relationship, the remote working means that I haven't managed to have many informal, chatty conversations with him. You know, the sort of conversations that you might have while making a cup of tea, where you learn more personal information.

I know he's not keen on chocolate or sweet things generally and I doubt he'd appreciate the types of things that I've given the women in my team in the past. Last year it was hand creams, the year before scented candles.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

A nice bag of coffee? Fancy tea bags?

I asked for this to be removed because I misread your post and suggested something unfeasible ☺️ good luck

A nice mug or beer

PersonaNonGarter · 03/11/2020 17:01

Unless teetotal, buy everyone a bottle of wine.

JellyBellies · 03/11/2020 17:06

Why not get the him a candle too? I can't see why it's only good for women.

MeadowHay · 03/11/2020 18:11

My DH is possibly an exception as he would be grateful for and use both hand cream and a scented candle?! Or could you be overthinking this a bit?

Pansypath · 03/11/2020 18:24

I think my dh would appreciate a box of chocolates or a bottle of wine.

Fruggalo · 03/11/2020 18:26

I have done fancy post it notes, a spice mix for curry, and boxes of chocolates before.

Oblomov20 · 03/11/2020 18:27

Why not a nice bottle of wine. He can at least give it to someone else if he doesn't drink. Most people appreciate this.

Juanmorebeer · 03/11/2020 18:28

A thermal travel mug? Nice bar of soap? Mini alcohol with a glass?

Do you know anything else about what he is into?

NightRiders · 03/11/2020 18:31

I would change what you were getting so you can get them all the same as each other.

Mytholmroyd · 03/11/2020 18:31

I bought some of these snowflake wrenches for Xmas presents - they look very useful and Christmassy!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/11/2020 18:33

My husband likes candles. He prefers a woody/nature scent rather than fruity or flowery.

StillWeRise · 03/11/2020 18:41

novelty socks? (I mean nice ones, with dogs on or something)
anything connected to a hobby/team he supports
er...book token?

anibendod · 03/11/2020 18:48

I've given a mini truckle of local cheese, crackers and a good chutney to my team several times over recent years as it always gets such a good response (mix of men and women on my team)

BurningBright · 04/11/2020 10:57

Thanks for all the ideas. Really helpful.

I've had socks and a mug from managers in the past, both of which would work for men or women.

37weekswithno2 · 04/11/2020 21:06

I second getting them all a nice mug

Stationfork · 07/11/2020 03:05

Yes socks is a good idea
