Does anyone know about Cheese?

Would you like to recommend me some cheese please?

I want to send my brother some cheese throughout December, sort of weekly advent calendar. Hopefully culminating in him spending Christmas with someone in our family where he will find under the tree a giant wedge of parmesan my parents are apparently getting. His relationship has ended, will be on his own, far from us and rest of the family right up until 23rd December.

He loves cheese, slight problem being I do not. I know nothing of such things and neither does DH. I have found various places online I can use (although recommendations VERY welcome) but turns out selection is far wider than I had anticipated. I know he isn't keen on goats cheese but enjoys blue cheeses (Stilton, Roquefort), in the past week of strategic questioning he seems to have eaten some Cheddar, Compte and Brie.

Accept this request is probably grating to true connoisseurs but please help!

Can't beat Stilton. Have you a local deli/butcher that sells it?

I have just seen this:

www.mousetrapcheese.co.uk/british-cheese-advent-calendar-24-days-of-artisan-cheese-10133-p.asp

Looks amazing. I am trying to talk myself down though. There is going to be an £8 one in the supermarkets with just 20g of cheese a day rather than 140g on average. Not as artisan but better for the waistline and bank account.

It’s the season for a Vacherin Mont d’Or. Perfect to bake in the oven. Just saying...

God, this is the thread of dreams!!! 😍

The cheese society do subscriptions....I’m sure they’d do a weekly one rather than a monthly one if you asked

Blacksticks blue is my favourite... Craving it now

If you're in Hackney there's a new cheese shop
on Columbia Road called Funk (set up by the Cheese Bar mentioned above) where you could get some good guidance - they're definitely still open in Lockdown.

Personally another vote for Black Bomber, but also some kind of truffle cheese eg a truffle pecorino - special for Christmas.

Google Paxton and Whitfield.

You can buy the very best cheeses from the cheesemonger of the year here:

Does he like sheep's milk ? Duddleswell is beautiful

MrsHamlet · 08/11/2020 00:01

I was literally about to post that, SSD - they're brilliant.

I have to say the Seven Sisters also looks superb, I might buy some 🤔

theconstantinoplegardener · 08/11/2020 00:04

Lovely idea. Don't forget that cheese needs to be refrigerated. A cheese that has spent several days under the Christmas tree in a centrally heated living room may not be very nice (or safe) to eat.

SomeSmotheringDreams · 08/11/2020 00:08

Gorwydd Caerphilly is my absolute favourite, with Swaledale gold second. I think if he's a serious cheese lover, I'd probably steer clear of flavoured cheeses like fruited wensleydales you can buy in a supermarket and go for more unusual cheeses from a cheesemonger.

La Vallage is lovely, a creamy soft cheese a bit like brie but with a creamier taste - Waitrose do it

Black Bomber, Pickle Power, Cornish Blue all good choices too. If you can get brie with truffle, that is one for a cheese lover.

GlamGiraffe · 08/11/2020 00:16

St felicien is the most yummy little cheese. Its devine.
Cornish yarg is lovely too.
Actually all chese is amazing but make sure you get some quince paste (membrillo) to go woth it. It makes an amazing difference. Otgoes deliviously well with things like manchego and you often get them served together on a slice of bread as a tapa.

Azzizia · 08/11/2020 00:20

That’s lovely you are thinking of him. My family are ok with me spending Christmas alone.

Courtyard dairy is amazing!

The leeds blue is my favourite ever cheese. I'm going to order some. Call them if you're not sure from the website

Vallage is the one that's very similar to Vignotte. To me, Vignotte is slightly creamier and softer and my preference.

Can anyone remember who I might've signed up for the radio times free back in March? Blush

I remember setting my first delivery to ensure the Christmas mag but otherwise I'm at a loss!

Isn't it just. So knowledgeable and one of the few places where they mature cheese onsite. I could spend hours in there.
