19yo DS1 wants only one thing for Christmas

An £80 single malt.

It's something a character in something he watches drinks. DS is not a big drinker, likes a beer with a curry but rarely has a second and he has occasionally enjoyed a single malt with his grandad.

The cost is about what we'd spend. His younger brother has a piece of tech at about the same price he'd like, but that seems like a "good" present compared to buying a 19yo strong drink.

Would you get it rather than come up with something else he doesn't really want? I suppose presents are supposed to be something extravagant you wouldn't buy for yourself...?

Lagavulin is a nice whiskey , check out Master of Malt , think they have it on offer ?

BullBailey · 31/10/2020 22:56

Whisky is one of my DHs hobbies and that of his friends. They Buy each other different bottles to try and he has a small glass every now and then. He reads about whisky and we’ve visited distilleries in the past.

Also, he has purchased expensive bottles and not touched them because whisky is collectible. Didn’t you hear about that father who bought is son a bottle for every year of his life from birth, then when he was 18 he sold them and got the deposit for a house?

It’s a nice gift. I agree that maybe a nice whisky glass and book to go with are good ideas and not too expensive.

He’s an adult, he has articulated that this is what he wants so just go for it! Better than spending the same on more traditional gifts he doesn’t want and won’t use just because you feel it’s more suitable. Gifts are about the recipient, my df asks for really unusual things sometimes for birthdays etc but it makes him happy to receive them and I wouldn’t have a clue where to start otherwise so it’s win win! gavisconismyfriend · 31/10/2020 23:24

Sounds like a great gift. He’ll be so chuffed with it and buying it for him will show that you respect him as an adult. It might seem like a lot for one bottle of whisky but it is a better way to spend the money than buying a load of toot that he doesn’t want.

CovidNightmare · 01/11/2020 00:25

Sounds like a great gift. Which malt is it?

Isadora2007 · 01/11/2020 03:21

It’s fine. Good gift with the wow factor. You can also get accessories like a nice glass or those stone things etc too.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/11/2020 03:32

I wondered if it was Lagavulin too. I would get him it. This might be the start of a good whisky collection. My DH has a nice selection built up over time.

ElGuardiandenoche · 01/11/2020 05:03

@1stV45, I'd definitely buy it for him. I have built up a lovely collection over the years and have some at £30 and others at £100+. I don't drink them every day but it's lovely being able to sit down with a glass of what ever I fancy when ever I fancy.

If it's the Lagavulin then It's definitely a great present.

Catsup · 01/11/2020 05:14

Tbf you could spend 3x that on trainers he 'really loves'... And he could step in dog shit within 10mins of wearing them 🙄. If it's what he wants and it's within your price range then what's the problem?

Bringonspring · 01/11/2020 05:39

Nope not a chance would I get it,

AlrightBabby · 01/11/2020 05:54

If it's the one John Wick drinks, my son had that a couple of years ago and it's bloody horrible

Catsup · 01/11/2020 05:54

@Brimgonspring Genuinely asking why not? He's of a legal age to drink. It's what he's saying he'd like. Realistically if he was just hoping to get pissed he'd ask for the £80, and buy himself a tenner bottle of gut rot vodka (or several)?

Raindropsonrosesand · 01/11/2020 05:56

Either get it for him or get something completely different. Don't get him a cheaper brand, or a smaller bottle.

If he's working, he could probably buy himself the bits and pieces you might have previously bought him for Christmas.

MessAllOver · 01/11/2020 06:00

If he's not a problem drinker and you know he'll savour it and drink it sensibly, I'd get it for him.

NoraButty · 01/11/2020 06:04

I’d buy it, gifting is about pleasing the receiver and if that’s what will make him happy then it’s a done deal.

KingscoteStaff · 01/11/2020 06:10

Is it Tallisker?

yearinyearout · 01/11/2020 06:18

Of course you should get it, why wouldn't you? One bottle of whisky isn't going to turn him into a raging alcoholic.

lovelemoncurd · 01/11/2020 06:22

If he was 16 I could see your point but he's 19! ( unless you live in the States and then I would get where you are coming from)

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 01/11/2020 06:26

I'd get it- nice, easy present!

Ducksurprise · 01/11/2020 06:55

I knew this thread would make me smile, do people really think a problem drinker would spend £80 on one bottle?? They'd ask for the cash and spend it on paint stripper cheap vodka. Also so pleased to read the op is sensible, you can't just buy a different one because you don't think it's worth the money. I think it's a lovely idea, I understand your desire to question it (I struggled when DS wanted to spend his Xmas money on one pair of trainers) but gifts are just that, something you wouldn't buy for yourself.

Frannibananni · 01/11/2020 07:02

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

Is it Lagavulin favoured by Ron Swanson in Parks and Rec?

If yes, get him it, he has excellent taste in comedy

Prepare to experience true freedom and bliss.
rwalker · 01/11/2020 07:06

If he wants it buy it TBH you could buy a tee shirt for £80 that would be in the bin in 12 months.

1stV45 · 01/11/2020 07:27

Yes, Lagavulin. Thanks everyone.
