Is anyone else looking at these? I’m trying to work out if they work with normal laptops and iPhones. Always end up more confused then when I started after reading online gaming advice, it’s all so techy! What are you buying?

Bumping as I’m interested in this too!

Me too!

What sort of budget are you looking at and what sort of tech do the recipients have already? There are very basic headsets which you put a mobile phone in, these basically let you watch a 3d video off YouTube and immerse yourself in the scene by turning round. These are cheap (£25) but no good for games or anything.

Then there are ones that connect to computers, the best one of these is the Valve Index but that is very expensive, however its excellent for gaming. You wojld need to check the computer spec before buying and it doesn't connect to Apples operating systems.

There is a Playstation specific one

There is also the Oculus range which is the only stand alone one which is good, but owned by facebook and the user has to have a facebook account to be able to use the Oculus. Its a good headset but having to be logged in to facebook is a huge downside- its so much cheaper than the Valve index for example because of facebooks data harvesting.

Yes- it’s not as simple as getting some thing to plug into a laptop or phone. You need the kit and special games etc.

We’ve got Vive, which runs from DH’s fancy PC and is not the cheapest. Oculus is cheaper (about £300?) and I think you can use it stand alone.

Thank you @DinosaurOfFire Child has got an iphone7 and a Dell laptop that is 12 months old and was about £500 if that gives an indication to its capabilities. (Ryzen 5 Radeon, Graphics AMD.)

So far from my basic understanding I thought the Oculus was my best bet as I think you can use it for Roblox? It’s £299 I think.

Roblox is on Oculus and on the Vive according to the Roblox website. The Vive recommends Radeon graphics, and seems to be a collaboration between HTC and Valve who make the Index so would probably be the more versatile as long as you have the PC to go with it. www.amd.com/en/technologies/vr-htc

The Vive cosmos is £550 in Currys, but the Oculus is definitely the cheaper option. How old is your DC, and how into gaming are they?

Lonelycrab · 28/10/2020 18:05

Vr not recommended for under 13 year olds.

Oculus go and quest are standalone and don’t need a pc. Oculus rift and others you use with a pc will need a pretty powerful graphics card.

Lonelycrab · 28/10/2020 18:23

Just to add roblox vr won’t work on the oculus go or quest, needs a dedicated pc system.

To my knowledge I don’t think a laptop graphics card will cut it, you need a full size card in a (powerful) tower pc but I might be wrong on that last bit. Google will tell you minimum specs.

WoobyWoo · 28/10/2020 18:27

I got ds the Oculus Rift (for playing Roblox) and it needs a gaming pc with a decent graphics card. The new Oculus Quest is standalone but not supported by Roblox so it depends what games he plays really!

Eliza72 · 28/10/2020 18:29

The stand alone Oculus has just been released and is cheaper than the one before it at £299! Because of this I picked up a second hand folder one for a lot cheaper. But then found out about the age limit. So we decided we would have it as a family present as we could imagine arguments on xmas day giving them a present and then telling them they could only play with it for ten mins!!!!

WoobyWoo · 28/10/2020 18:31

Roblox will run on the newer Ryzen 5 but I’d go for 16gb and the best card you can to avoid frustration.

yellowsun · 28/10/2020 18:37

DS is 11 and we only let him go on it for short periods of time every now and then. It’s not something I would want a child his age having unlimited access to.

Anotherducker · 28/10/2020 20:12

Thanks for all the advice, I need it! Dc is 11 so maybe I need to rethink the whole thing.

Graphic cards are completely new to me. We haven’t got a PC. She only plays on Roblox, but it sounds like to do that with VR is going to be tricky and very expensive. (And she’s apparently too young)
