Gift for female with learning disability

mummyof2boys30 · 27/10/2020 11:56

My aunt in her 50s lives in a residential home and has quite significant learning disability. Need some gift inspiration. Havent been able to visit this year due to covid and she is probably very likely to spend Christmas in the residential home shes in. Budget 10-15. I had ordered a mickey mouse hot water bottle then my mum informed me she doesnt think it would be allowed. Thanks

Adult colouring book?

Love51 · 27/10/2020 12:04

Why wouldn't it be allowed? We might all suggest things that aren't allowed as well.
Posh chocolates.
Orchid or other houseplant.
Perfume / smellies
Nail polish set? If she likes that sort of thing.
A big cuddly toy / squishy cushion.

Goldistheanswer · 27/10/2020 12:06

Cuddly soft toy to hold. Fidget toys. Warm and soft throw/blanket.
Drawing book and pens. Would she look at a photo book of familiar places or people?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/10/2020 12:06

Hot water bottles generally not allowed because of the scalding risk.

Elderflower14 · 27/10/2020 12:07

Microwave hot water bottle safer maybe?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 27/10/2020 12:09

They may not be allowed either. It might depend on assessments of her skin and if she can recognise when things are too hot.

Clarabellawilliamson · 27/10/2020 12:11

How independent is she? Perhaps something like a purse?

mummyof2boys30 · 27/10/2020 12:22

Shes not very independent. As in she would always have carers etc with her when out and about. Will definitely rule out the water bottle then. I just never thought as thought would of been nice and cosy if someone would fill it. Will look at all your suggestions thanks

Make her a photo book (many websites offer this) of family pics including of her, pets, happy events?

BertieBloopsMum · 27/10/2020 12:29

A nice plant for her room.

Doyouwantanothercuppa · 27/10/2020 12:30

A photo blanket. Snapfish or photobox sell them.

MaudHatter · 27/10/2020 12:30

A bird feeder to stick to her bedroom window ?

Smallsteps88 · 27/10/2020 12:31

Well what does she like? That would be useful information.

MaudHatter · 27/10/2020 12:31

A jigsaw , painting by number set

mummyof2boys30 · 27/10/2020 12:41

She does like arts and crafts so will look at adult colouring or paint to number set. She also loves cups of tea and chocolate biscuits. Its my dads sister and I don't see her very often and he doesn't know either lol

I have a relative that fits your description.

I usually get her something to wear. Her birthday is coming up and I have sent her two jumpers. I got them in the Pr*rk sale ages ago. One is brightly coloured - probably a bit brighter than I would wear, and the other is more neutral. Both are nice, and were with postage and card came within OP's budget.

She is usually thrilled with them and says 'BeKind got me this'.

Other suggestions would be something with her name on it. Oh shit, that was meant to go in the parcel but I forgot. Never mind, She can have it for Christmas.

Daftapath · 27/10/2020 12:42

Clothing - slippers, pjs dressing gown? Wellies, gloves, scarf, Christmas jumper

Activities - colouring, card game (snap - depending on her cognitive level), dvd, cd, Disney + subscription,

Food - chocolates, posh hot chocolate with festive mug,

I like the idea of a photo blanket but also a place mat, mug or cushion?

Handbag/shopping bag? Cold also hang on the back of a wheelchair if needed.

QuacksInTheDark · 27/10/2020 12:44

Does she like dolls? My friends sister loves dolls and babies.

BeKindItCostsNothing · 27/10/2020 12:46

I forgot to add, my relative doesn't get much in the post, so a parcel is very exciting for her.

The things we take for granted.

Zzz1234 · 27/10/2020 12:49

Nice pyjamas, dressing gown, slippers, toiletries, blanket for bed, an afternoon tea type kit (biscuits and tax-free this could be shared with other residents-one of the homes I know would make it aunties name's afternoon tea party and make it a bit of an event- not many highlights at the moment),

nicknamehelp · 27/10/2020 12:51

Fluffy socks, Hobby craft sell pottery you can paint, photo book, scrap book,

Rae36 · 27/10/2020 12:59

I have a relative who sounds similar. 2 years ago we got her a build a bear toy and we send her clothes for it for birthdays and Christmas. She loves dressing it up. For her birthday this year we got her a chair that turns into a bed for it and she was very happy. We haven't been able to visit for a while but we can zoom chat and she always shows us what her toy is wearing and shows us how it sits in its chair. She is very childlike in her behaviour though, not everyone will be like that and appreciate it.

We have bought her a microwave hot water bottle thing before with oats in it and she is able to use it but they don't make it very warm at all for her in case she burns herself without realising, but she likes hugging it all the same even though its hardly warmer than normal. She says it smells like flowers when it's warm.

mummyof2boys30 · 27/10/2020 13:04

Thank you for all your responses. Some lovely suggestions so I'm going to have a wee look into them all now. 😊 She normally comes home for Christmas to her sisters but due to covid and high risk she won't be this year so will already be difficult for her

How about a selection of miniature perfumes like Yardley that she can use. She might enjoy choosing a different one each day. I bought some recently for about £10.

Lovemusic33 · 27/10/2020 18:11

A hottie would be better than a hot water bottle? One you heat in the microwave?

My dd has special needs (teenager) and she loves things that smell nice, soap being one of her favourites, she doesn't necessarily use it, just sniffs it. Primark have some lovely Disney plush toys that light up (i think they are £10) or maybe something to wear like a really soft jumper.
