My poor dd's can't decide between Baby Alive and My Baby... any pointers anyone?

Personally I dread the whole pooing and weeing thing, and I think that My Baby is prettier.

Anybody got any of these dolls and can help my dd's decide?

My dd is 5 and has baby annabell and baby alive. she never plays with baby alive and will pick annabell everytime. Even then she never turns it on cause she hates the crying! Now she wants the 'mummy make me better' doll.
I think Baby Alive looks weird and to be honest I think that is why my dd will pick Annabell cause she looks like a real baby!

Both our dds have only ever really liked their cheapo ToysRUs and Mothercare non-peeing/crying/speaking babies more than the fancier Annabel/Amanda etc equivalents. The ToysRUs one in particular has a nice face and a soft body (and doesn't look like a spatchcocked chicken which some of them do) which I think appeals. We bought Amazing Amanda (talking, hugging, etc etc) a couple of years ago when dd1 was 4 and she was a complete disaster. Dd1 never really liked her and was as unnerved as the rest of us when she whined for pizza - yuk. I gave her to the local playgroup a few months later - they onloy started liking her there when she finally shut up.

Sorry, a bit off topic. I just mean, don't feel you have to go down the fancy baby route. But you'll probably be nagged into it anyway!

iheartdusty · 14/10/2007 21:25

have you or they tried holding either of the dolls?
I was weighing up My baby vs B Annabell, then I felt the arms of My Baby - they feel horrible! You can feel all the wire and machinery that allows them to do so many actions, they don't seem to have any padding over the arms, and although I haven't seen one in motion, I bet there is a constant whirring machinery noise.

A soft body doll feels nicest to cuddle. If they already have a doll that can go in the bath, then a baby doll who can drink and say a few words may be all that is required. You can still get the classic Tiny Tears for a wetting doll, if needed. My DD (who hardly manages to watch any commercial TV, despite her best efforts!) asked for a doll who cries real tears. So she will be getting BA3, not the new one, no spooky head turning!

BTW, if you get baby Millie from elc she is on offer with a very pretty free wooden cot!

sorry, I don't know anything about Baby Alive but I don't like her face.

You can get loads of accessories for all baby bjorn dolls - of which there are now loads! so there are loads of pressies ideas for years to come. I do wish I got her baby bjorn instead of annabell.

emkana · 14/10/2007 22:24

thanks for your posts

they already have a Baby Annabel each but hardly ever turn them on. [sigh]

Why are you even thinking about getting them another one then? We bought Baby Annabel for dd about three years ago, and it was a complete waste of money. dd's favourite (and now only) doll is a woolies first doll with closed eyes, and dd is devoted to her. dd's imagination stretches far beyond what any of the action dolls do, and the only problem is that as a 12" doll finding her new stuff can be a bit of a struggle. I think that the smaller dolls fit in a small child's arms much better than the heavy big ones, and the actions/noises are horrible. Resist the pressure, and buy them something else!

emkana · 14/10/2007 22:34

Because they've seen the adverts (not at our house, I hasten to add!) and they think it will be so lovely to have this doll "just like a real baby"

would they be interested in a Rosy doll, if they don't really use the sounds and movements?
www.comparestoreprices.co.uk/childrens-gifts/rosy-doll.asp

or any of the beautiful Corolle ones?

What do you think they really want to do with the dolls? Dress them, play with them like a real baby, or chat to them eg playing school etc? Each of those could be done with a different kind of doll.

iheartdusty · 14/10/2007 22:36

have you considered a fur-real pet? they do little baby animal noises (plus mechanical whirring!) for the cute cuddly factor!

emkana · 14/10/2007 22:53

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm afraid the dd's are pretty determined to have one of these two dolls, but I'll try and steer them away from baby alive, she just looks so odd

I am sure i saw baby alive in Boots shop for half price (def not on website though).HTH

Heated · 14/10/2007 23:34

Sorry to hijack, but I know diddly about girl's toys and want to pick your brains: can you recommend a good doll for dressing up and has eyes that open and close? Don't think we want it to have batteries since it's likely to end up in the bath!

empen · 15/10/2007 08:56

i actually think there is a Baby Bjorn designed to go in water. I have just asked dd (5) ans she reckons only one of its eyes closes!!! Only the one that wees - not real wee only water, closes both its eyes!!! But you can put it to the bottom of the bath and it does not die!!!

Has that helped!

Heated · 15/10/2007 13:14

Thank you, I shall have a look online at the baby bjorn. God, when I was young there was Tiny Tears and that was it.

donnie · 15/10/2007 13:17

baby alive looks like a freakozoid.

nooka · 15/10/2007 22:50

dd watches TV at this time of the year and says "I want that" "I want that" to everything. She gets very peeved with me when I tell her all the things she wants are horrible, but she does seem to accept that means she won't be getting them! I can't stand pink plastic stuff, girls toys are all so gruesome it's hard to find dd anything nice (luckily she is still at the age when she thinks any present is just great). Having said that if I had to choose, I think that My Baby is marginally nicer than Baby Alive which is very peculiar (quite Bratzy with those big painted eyes).

dollyk · 16/10/2007 22:33

my daughter has baby alive and she has never really played with it .I think its over rated and for the money it should not look bald for £50

empen · 16/10/2007 22:58

Have a look at the For Sale bit cause someone is selling Baby Alive if you still want one?!
