How do you make your houses smell amazing?

I always have candles on the go and love a really rich Christmassy smell. More spices/Oudh kind of smell than anything sweet. Two Christmas candles I’ve bought so far smell of absolutely nothing! (Sainsbury’s & H&M)
We do have more expensive ones but I like them burning pretty constantly throughout the winter so looking for an economical alternative.

I also read about putting drops of oil into your radiators which wafts the smell about when they’re on but I’m not sure if that’s recommended Confused

Any great ideas?

I have a wax melt type of thing, currently burning cinnamon wax and my house smells amazing (if you like cinnamon Grin ). The other thing I use is one of those things you put oils in water and it’s vaporises it, I forgot what it’s called 🙈 I like candles but I prefer my smells stronger than candles normally give.

I’ve got a Yankee electric wax warmer. It takes those wax melt cups and I really love it. I have it downstairs and can smell it all through the house. Currently have a Christmas one on the go! It’s got a timer so I usually do 3 hours in the morning then sometimes put it back on in the evening.

(Though I also have a massive Christmas candle I bought from dunelm burning too and that smells nice)

DIFFUSER! Grin

Bettina500 · 19/10/2020 17:52

B&m and Home Bargains both sell seasonal candles (possibly the same brand but unsure) that are very cheap and smell really nice.
Festive Zoflora also makes the house smell nice

FizzyPink · 19/10/2020 17:54

Oohh I’ve never tried a wax burner, will give that a go.
I do actually have an electric diffuser but never really fancied the smells that came with it. I hadn’t considered Christmassy oils......off to browse Amazon

I buy diffusers, lamp fragrances and candles from Ashleigh and Burwood, these seem to have the nicest smells.

MJMG2015 · 19/10/2020 17:57

Open the windows 🤷🏻‍♀️

I get bad headaches from
Fragrances so can't do any of the above.

But I'm happy with fresh air and a slight sense of shampoo/soap etc.

Cocklepops · 19/10/2020 18:12

I swear by St Eval candles, especially their winter fragrances - absolutely glorious and fill the house.

Bvop · 19/10/2020 18:15

Cinnamon stick in 1cm of water. Microwave for 30s. Ditto vanilla essence.

orangenasturtium · 19/10/2020 18:23

The White Company and M&S have some good Christmassy scents as fragrance oil that you can use in diffusers. If you can track some down, the discontinued Crabtree & Evelyn Noel is amazing.

I have ceramic stars that I hang on radiators that have unglazed backs that you pour a few drops of oil on. They are meant to be Christmas decorations. I think I got them from the Body Shop.

Christmas difuser with the White Company' Fir or Winter oils.

Lovemusic33 · 19/10/2020 18:59

Most smelly things give me a head ache. Best way to make the house smell Christmasy is by cooking mince pies and ginger bread. I usually dry orange slices and place them in a bowl on the coffee table with some cinnamon sticks. I can’t really burn or melt anything due to having pets in the room.

CountFosco · 19/10/2020 19:01

I get the DC to make pomanders. House smells gorgeous and Christmassy.

Moonflower12 · 19/10/2020 19:56

@tywysoges
Which brand of wax have you got? I love cinnamon and I'm always looking for a nice smelly melt!

stardance · 19/10/2020 20:02

We have one of those air freshers that spray when someone walks past, think it might be a glade one? I found a new 'candy cane' fragrance for it and it's beautiful! Peppermint and vanilla. Going to stock up.

Also you can't beat the smell of homemade gingerbread!

tywysoges · 19/10/2020 20:08

@Moonflower12 I think it’s Yankee, but I bought it from Asda so not sure. Will look!

Suzi888 · 19/10/2020 20:09

Zoflora inspired Wax melts and my Christmas memories Yankee candle at Christmas!

Plussizejumpsuit · 19/10/2020 20:13

Essential oils in electric diffusers. Absolutely not the synthetic blends. I use cinammon, orange, nutmeg, clove and that type of thing in winter.

There's loads of lovely smells like yalang yalang or rosewood for the rest of the year.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/10/2020 20:22

Since the arrival of the cats ( who like to throw things on the floor ) no candles , not safe

We've got a plug in burner , I bought some Neales Yard Oils ( Mandarin Oil and Cinnamon Oil) just vary the ratio and not to let ot burn dry .

ResplendentAutumn · 19/10/2020 20:39

THE most amazing spray I've had which blew everything out the water, candles every thing... Was a pine forest spray by Michel? M from tk max so... I could never find it again.

Applejack87 · 20/10/2020 06:11

Hi everyone , I’m looking for Christmas crackers that are good but reasonably priced any ideas please ? Also I’m looking for a good Xmas tree but everywhere I’ve looks are over priced and sparse

Applejack87 · 20/10/2020 06:12

Oops sorry I posted in the wrong place 🙈

Bluntness100 · 20/10/2020 06:20

I don’t know about others, but opening my windows does not make my house smell amazing. Confused

I also use a humidifier, and I use essential oils in it. My current favourite is a mix of amber and ylang ylang. Everyone comments on it. I had guests at the weekend and many comments of it smells lovely in here, what is that.

Candles are great but humidifiers give you a constant smell for hours, so you get longevity, and they are also a very cost effective way to do it.
