Luxury hot chocolate powder

I’d like to buy DH some really luxury hot chocolate powder for Christmas, do any of you lovely people have any recommendations?

Requirements are plain flavour and ideally slightly dark chocolate.

He drinks Cadbury’s at the moment, the stuff you mix with hot milk so I’m after something more decadent. TIA.

I got a Velvetiser for my birthday and the hotel chocolat ones are amazing. You don’t need to have a velvetiser.

Charbonnel & Walker is a close second in my view

Whittards classic Milk Chocolate one is lovely, they do nice tins of it at Christmas too (although these are much smaller and more expensive!).

AwkwardAsAllGetout · 19/10/2020 13:50

We have a velvetiser that sees very little use now, I found it to just be far too rich. My absolute favourite is the Whittard Christmas hot chocolate, it has a hint of nutmeg and cherries. I was genuinely devastated last year when they ran out of stock and I’ve just bought 5 tins to stash in the pantry to get me through what’s clearly going to be a shitty winter.

I agree with hotel chocolat. We have the machine too and it's Great. You say your husband likes dark (me too) but don't go too dark with their chocolates. I really like the 50% but the 80% is awful, there are a few in between too. i usually eat 70-75% chocolate.

Eyewhisker · 19/10/2020 14:00

Kokoa collection. It is solid chocolate that you melt with milk so very rich.

Viviennemary · 19/10/2020 14:04

There s even a hot chocolate advent calendar I came across the other day. Not sure who makes that.

EerilyDeleted · 19/10/2020 14:04

I love Sloanes of London dark from Waitrose (the milk version is too sweet). We have a velvetiser, you can't use this directly in it because it's beans (similar size to coffee beans) but you can heat/froth the milk, pour a little over the beans to melt them, then top up the cup stirring it in.

iknowimcoming · 19/10/2020 14:10

Twinings Swiss hot chocolate is our fave - not sure if they do a dark version

movingonup20 · 19/10/2020 14:19

If you want luxury, buy cocoa and make on the stove - beats any hot chocolate powder hands down

Lockdownhairdontcare · 19/10/2020 14:21

Yumbles all the way. Their dark calming hit chocolate is a real treat and comes in a beautiful glass jar. £5 off for new customers too,

Anything from here is excellent -

Green & Blacks is amazing. Smooth, not too rich, not too sweet. My favourite, I'll never buy Cadbury again.

Halloweenies · 19/10/2020 14:41

Its not luxury but the nicest hot chocolate I've ever had is asda smart price hot chocolate (not the reduced sugar one) that comes in a foil bag. I've drunk it for years and it was recently on 'eat well for less' being blind taste tested against four other hot chocolates, as soon as I saw it I said it'd win and it did! Maybe get it and decant it into a pretty tin.

AnotherEmma · 19/10/2020 14:46

I've been gifted lots of fancy hot chocolate over the years, and nothing comes close to Green & Blacks. I see two PPs have already mentioned it so this is the third vote! I drink it with milk.

BlueThistles · 19/10/2020 14:52

heaven

TheGhostofGlumy · 19/10/2020 15:03

Well, to get it here costs an arm and a leg but this is the best hot chocolate I've ever had. Nothing in England comes close.

Whittard of Chelsea do very nice ones, I think they’re the more affordable side of luxury. Or Fortnum and Mason if you’re going very extravagant!

30not13 · 19/10/2020 19:58

Probably not gift worthy but Lidl deluxe chocolate and chilli powder is amazing

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/10/2020 20:33

I've just remembered I have a tub of the Hotel Chocolat Classic Hot Chocolate . I'm far far too mean to buy a Velvetiser but I have a nice tall stainless steel pot and a rechargeable whisk
DD and I use soya milk which is sweeter than dairy .

Might have a try this weekend - Hot Chocolate to practise !

SuperFairy · 19/10/2020 20:34

Thanks again, we both love 75% dark chocolate, I’ll definitely take notice of the comments about not going too high for drinking chocolate.
Oh and no worries if DH doesn’t like it, all the more for me 😂

Twining’s Swiss is really sweet. This is my fave: shop.sacher.com/en/original-sacher-hot-chocolate

pendragondrinks.co.uk/

The dark spice from here is really lovely. I've also tried and liked the dark orange and the milk cinnamon.

iknowimcoming · 20/10/2020 08:21

The guy who sold me my nespresso machine told me the milk frother can be used to make amazing hot chocolate and it is good - not sure it'd cope with grated chocolate but worth a go! (I think it works in a similar way to the velvetiser but without the price tag)
