Tech Ideas for a 7 year old

My son is just about to turn 7 and I'm thinking of ideas for Christmas as he doesn't know what he wants. He really likes anything computer/tech related, less bothered about Lego these days.

He has a tablet and Nintendo Switch with a good selection of games. I'm thinking of getting him a Nintendo Labo set as something a bit different, but would appreciate any other ideas.

I've been looking at the Kano coding sets, but he's not that bothered about Star Wars or Harry Potter. I've had a general look at robots, but nothing particularly stands out.

Electronics kit ?

Snap circuits are very good.

Someone recommended this Coding board game recently, which I'm planning to get my DD(8). I'm a technologist, and there's a 'way of thinking' when coding, which the board game seems to teach.

Lego Boost also looks fun, although pricy (does come down to £105ish fairly often)

Kidizoom camera or watch
Sphero mini
Nobi robot smartwatch

My son is also 7 and has been asking for an entire year for a gaming PC so that he can create his own games.

We have relented and bought him one as a joint birthday/ Christmas present (his birthday is in December) as they are very expensive. He is very computer orientated and doesn't like many guys any more

Some good stuff here: www.techwillsaveus.com/

Turing tumble. Not tech in the usual sense of the word, but the theory is that it operates how a computer does, and you have to code it to create different patterns.

Some great ideas so far, will be taking a good look after dinner!

@Raindropsonrosesand I had that game in my Wishlisr but not looked at it too much. I work in app development so appreciate where you are coming from.

Bloxxels is brilliant

Klutz do a Lego animation kit/book which has gone down well with the boys we have bought it for. Ypu need a phone/tablet and there are a few suggestions of which apps you can download, the book itself folds out to make backdrops for your films and I think it comes with a few minifigs and accessories.

A small desk light is useful, and DS liked having a flexible tripod to keep the camera still.

If he gets into it, brick flicks is another good book, although that one gets a lot more complex.

He can create them on a regular PC; a gaming PC has the spec and the cooling to play high spec games, but for a child creating them is a lot lower demand.

Mine liked the ozobot

ritzbiscuits · 22/10/2020 15:08

@PracticingPerson Oh yes, we had a go with one of those at a science museum last year, lots of fun.

Tech for a 7yo.
A tablet if they don't already have one. Some sort of music for their room, either a bluetooth speaker or a echo dot, a camera but not a kidizoom something a bit more grown up.
