Anyone have beef or venison for Christmas dinner.

It's looking like it's going to be just our immediate family for Christmas Day.
So no point getting a turkey, and chicken doesn't seem that special.

Thinking about venison or beef instead.
But then all the accompanying veg and side dishes would be different too.

If you have roast beef or venison for Christmas, what cut do you get, and what do you serve alongside?

You could do a rib of beef! That would be a lovely treat. But not much cheaper than a turkey...

Duck would be a great option too.

But tbh it’s the sides that make a traditional Christmas dinner, so a chicken with all the usual trimmings really does feel just as special.

Ninkanink · 16/10/2020 16:25

Or you could do goose which is really lovely.

JamSarnie · 16/10/2020 16:25

I have had fillet steak before.

Why would the veg be different? Personally I have the same veg and sides whether I am eating beef or turkey because I like them 😁

Rustyigloo · 16/10/2020 16:29

We're getting a rib of beef this year. We'll still have all the same veg and throw in a couple of yorkshire puddings for the kids.

I'd much rather have beef leftovers than turkey personally.

Ninkanink · 16/10/2020 16:29

Uh sorry, I realised I didn’t actually answer your question there...got a little too excited...my ideal Christmas dinner would be one of every possible type of roast! Grin

We always have 2 meats on xmas day. Usually do turkey and gammon but have ordered rib of beef this year to go with the turkey. Veg will be same, probably be cauliflower cheese, sprouts, mashed carrot & swede and red cabbage as well as the roasties. Oh and will still have pigs in blankets or dd would kill me Smile
Would you have duck? The M&S one looked lovely in the xmas booklet. Or you could get a turkey crown if theres only a few of you.

M0mmyneedswine · 16/10/2020 16:42

Roast beef, all the usual sides here

AuntImmortelle · 16/10/2020 16:47

We have done beef for the last few years as no one that fond of turkey. We buy rib of beef - it's lovely.

Also have done a capon instead of turkey on boxing day when family come - its a de-testicled cockerel - so it grows larger than a normal chicken but doesn't get tough. Very good alternative.

Salmon. With a lovely creamy sauce. Cook everything else in advance and time it for the salmon to cook. Takes about twenty minutes or so for the fish. Gorgeous.

Of course I am biased, we have this every year at Christmas. Yummmmmmy.

JaJaDingDong · 16/10/2020 16:51

We always have beef

Venison is better stewed. It can be dry and rough roasted.

Goose is tasty, but your house will smell of goose fat for weeks afterwards and there's very little meat on an enormous carcass.

EggysMom · 16/10/2020 16:56

We have beef or lamb as we don't like turkey! In terms of "sides" isn't it just an elaborate roast dinner?

SoItStops · 16/10/2020 17:12

I love to do rib of beef at Christmas with no change to the sides Smile

chipsandpeas · 16/10/2020 17:14

ill be doing beef wellington this christmas - with potatoes and veg

Lovemusic33 · 16/10/2020 17:27

We have venison a few years ago for Christmas dinner (not at my house), I had to lie to the kids about what it was as they wouldn’t have eaten it if they knew I was Rudolph 🤣, it was a bit dry, I prefer roast beef.

Lovemusic33 · 16/10/2020 17:30

“Had”

ShashukaSally · 16/10/2020 17:32

Always have beef and pork here

QueenofLean · 16/10/2020 17:36

Yes we do. Rib of beef last year, venison Wellington the year before. Sides are things like braised red cabbage, cauliflower cheese and cabbage sautéed with garlic and bacon.

CrunchyNutNC · 16/10/2020 17:37

Beef is lovely, but I'd always rate a sirloin roast a bit more highly than rib, especially for something like christmas.

Someonesayroadtrip · 16/10/2020 17:41

We get a small stuffed turkey from M&S and get beef too.

Whathappenedtothelego · 16/10/2020 17:45

Lots of mention of rib of beef - presumably that has the bones in? Is it easy to carve?

I did see the duck in the M&S catalogue and thought it looked lovely, might think about that seriously.

As far as sides are concerned, with turkey I would have roast potatoes, chipolatas, bread sauce, sage and onion stuffing, roast parsnips, sprouts, glazed carrots, cranberry sauce, a glug of sherry in the gravy. Very Christmassy.

Whereas with beef I would have roast potatoes, mashed parsnips, mashed swede, a big Yorkshire pudding, peas, Savoy cabbage, mustard, horseradish sauce, red wine gravy. Very delicious, but doesn't scream Christmas.

Does it have to? The Christmas tree, presents etc will probably make it clear it’s Christmas Grin

Keepkondoing · 16/10/2020 17:48

We always have turkey and beef, and all the trimmings whatever meat we have anyway! Always roast potatoes, Yorkshire’s, pigs in blankets, roast parsnips, sprouts and bacon, broccoli, carrots and peas. Yum!

Skigal86 · 16/10/2020 17:54

We usually have beef, we’ve also had individual chicken breasts filled with stuffing and wrapped in Parma ham and also duck breasts. Sides are always the same though, roasties, mash, carrots, courgettes, broccoli cheese, read cabbage, sprouts with bacon, parsnips, pigs in blankets, stuffing and Yorkshire pud

Qwom · 16/10/2020 18:01

We'll have venison because DP hunts.
Will serve it with roast potatoes and red cabbage, or maybe colcanon, parsnips, pigs in blankets, and yorkshire puddings

CrunchyNutNC · 16/10/2020 18:02

Rib of beef doesn't have bone OP. It's basically the same as rib eye steak, but still all joined together.
