If you buy a Christmas ornament for your dc each year

I usually get an ornament that represents each dc’s interests or personality. I think it will be something Harry Potter based for dd, as she’s really got into the books now. I’m vaguely thinking of a Percy Jackson/Greek mythology theme for ds but I haven’t seen anything suitable, so I might need to have another think.

What are you getting for your dc?

I don't tend to plan it but I let them choose one each when we go somewhere like a garden centre that has a lot on offer. If you wanted a special one you could ask someone on Etsy to create it?

CoffeeAndEnnui · 16/10/2020 01:43

Liberty had a gorgeous gold winged foot when I was lurking around the Christmas department today soaking up some happy vibes. Might be worth a mooch on the [[https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/christmas/christmas-shop/christmas-baubles/ website}} to see if you can buy online. I daren't check in case I bankrupt myself...

CoffeeAndEnnui · 16/10/2020 01:43

Yikes, short link fail.

ShaunaTheSheep · 16/10/2020 08:43

Either they choose themselves, or I buy similar but not identical ones.

Amazingly they remember their own and insist on hanging them on the tree each year.

Saisong · 16/10/2020 09:11

So many crafty people around here that I almost always order them something bespoke - with their names on, special interest, hand painted etc. Yes they do cost more, but they are more special and it is helping local people with business. So you may be able to get something made?

Also look at the Gisela Graham range - there are so many glass varieties - I've definately seen mermaids/Posidon and winged horses/Pegasus.

A couple of years ago I got some lovely Xmas themed boxes for my kids to keep their decorations in, and it has become a huge ceremony getting the boxes outand letting them put their decorations on first. They absolutely love the whole tradition, and when they finally leave home they will have a ready made box of decorations to start their own tree.

AriettyHomily · 16/10/2020 09:13

Mine choose their own. They already have this years as they bought them when we were on holiday in the summer. An ice cream and a roller skate.

They have some beautiful ones and equally some delightfully tacky ones.

I've long given up on having a themed tree!

GunsAndShips · 16/10/2020 09:16

The children choose their own. We go to our local garden centre, have a hot drink and mince pie/gingerbread man and then look at the decorations and spend ages choosing. The garden centre goes all out every year and the children list the visit as one of their highlights.

thelegohooverer · 16/10/2020 11:12

@CoffeeAndEnnui thanks for the winged foot. That’s really unusual - I’m going to show it to ds later and see if it appeals.
@saisong love the gisela Graham pegasi. We have special boxes for their decorations too and it’s lovely taking out all their treasures and junk every year and chatting about them. I always try and do it separately with them.

I like to think that they’ll take their box of decorations with them when they leave home and I’ll have a glamorous themed tree but I have a feeling that might not quite go to plan!

Like gunsandships we usually just go to the garden centre and let them pick one each.

PhantomErik · 16/10/2020 11:21

You can get a Camp Half Blood necklase that you could thread on a red ribbon.

My DS loves & has read everything by Rick Riordan!

PhantomErik · 16/10/2020 11:27

Oh & yes to the new ornament relating to their interests.

This year DD11 is getting a piano one.
DS10 a rubiks snake puzzle & DS8 a How To Train Your Dragon one.

I've actually bought keyrings & will be threading them on either red ribbon or red & white twine. Each DC has their own tree in their rooms so have all their quirky decs on them.

We do decorations for our tree too. Past hits have been lego baubles, a bus, a train and a hot wheel!

Got a lovely Harry Potter one for my son in Primark on Saturday.
My 4 year old is getting a Batman one from Geek store and my 1 year old is getting a giraffe (if i can find one)

GunsAndShips · 16/10/2020 13:58

I don't think we will ever have anything other than an eclectic tree. I buy a Christmas decoration from everywhere we visit and people buy them as gifts when they travel so we have a festive Canadian moose, a wombat in a Santa hat, a Father Christmas in tartan brandishing a saltire etc. We also have lots of felt animals but peculiar ones like a narwhal, sloth, mongoose and many more. Last year DD chose a festive vampire bat and DS, a brussel sprout in a manger. We lso have all my Grandma's Victorian glass decorations. Eclectic is definitely the word. I love it.

We have Harry Potter ones too but they're mine (Primark do them every year).

ShaunaTheSheep · 16/10/2020 21:22

Brussel sprout in a manger- love it!

JeffreyJefferson · 16/10/2020 21:24

@Voiceofreason92 have a look in paperchase for the giraffe one they usually have ones like that

Audreyseyebrows · 16/10/2020 21:30

Mine got given a beautiful Danish advent present from their godparents where each day they opened a wrapped tree ornament. On the last day they each got a nutcracker ornament. They were all wooden (and tasteful! Grin ) They’ve had them for about 15 years and they still love them.

thelegohooverer · 16/10/2020 22:09

@Audreyseyebrows the Danes really know how to do Christmas!

Sadly many of my decorations parted ways with good taste. We’ve had a few repurposed toys and key rings with a coat of clear glittery nail varnish.

I have some glass baubles for tea lights that we’ve glued small toys into with salt and glitter snow.

I think my tree is stretching the outer limits of eclectic

Tk max is always worth a look for their Xmas decorations. My tree has been totally revamped over the last 5-8 years and is now just absolutely bloody magical. For a start, it rotates and I've replaced every single decoration with glass baubles that are very unusual and well, let's just say niche ! I love it, I get constant compliments and when my kids leave home they each have favourites to take with them. These are three I got from tk max yesterday. Santa riding a sea turtle? Slutty alligator? Hell yes!

Twilightstarbright · 17/10/2020 07:31

@GunsAndShips your tree sounds brilliant! I'm similar, no plain baubles and it's a random mismatch of styles but so many are from holidays or scouting in charity shops.

DS is 3 but I love the idea of backfilling one decoration per year based on his interests. This year will definitely be a dinosaur.

BakewellGin1 · 17/10/2020 08:26

My DS got a new one every year until last year when he ran out of ideas aged 11 but he says he is going to look again this year.

The actual base colours of my tree and red and gold with a mix of baubles from over the years added which are none matching but many hold memories such as a small rocking horse my neighbours bought me aged 6... Plus a Mickey Mouse, Polar Express Bell, a Lightening Mcqueen, Chip and Dale, it sounds awful but is lovely, quite traditional looking but aimed at the kids. Every year we talk about them as we decorate

Youngest DS will start the tradition this year too so I would like something nice...

Rainallnight · 17/10/2020 08:31

My kids are tiny but I’ve started to pick decorations for them and my plan is to give them to them as their own starter decoration collection when they leave home (sob!)

Coffeecak3 · 17/10/2020 08:35

My 2 are adults now and I used to let them choose an ornament each year.
This year I took my dgs to Disneyland and he bought his parents a Mickey mouse shaped bauble. It's just the shape and plain.

Marmite27 · 17/10/2020 16:23

My two have been given Newbridge silver ornaments every year since they were born. I buy one and so do MIL / SIL. They both have trees full and enjoy being able to buy the new releases.

TW2013 · 17/10/2020 16:50

Ours always pick their own at the same garden centre each year. Am perversely tempted to also get them a coronavirus themed decoration, though realise that to some that might not appeal.
