Making your own hampers

I've decided to do a hamper for each of my DC and one for myself and partner. I may do them for other family members too.

Have yiu made them? What did you put in them? Any tips for arranging the content or finishing them decoratively? Thanks!

I've bought the ready made kits before (Dunelm ones are nice at £4 and £6 this year). To keep things in place I told over cello tape to make it double sided and keep things in place then cover with the cellophane.

I’m doing a couple this year:
For niece & nephews it’s an ice cream sundae kit (they need to just add ice cream) so I’ve got sundae bowls & spoons, ice cream scoop, then a variety of toppings/sweets and sauces.
For friends dcs: bath themed with bath toy/ducks, bath bombs, sponges.
For DD: hot chocolate so a nice mug (currently loves llamas) hot choc spoons, hot chocolate snowman (thanks Aldi), marshmallows and her favourite bar of Lindt chocolate.

I’m doing a ‘New Years Eve celebrate at home’ hamper:
Indoor sparklers
Bubbly
Party poppers
Chocolate fondue kit
Board game/card game

We usually get one from my in-laws. It usually has sugar mice, fudge, mints , a pannetone, chutneys and whatever else they see that they think we'd like.

My lot [5 adult DD's, 1 DGS and DH] all get a themed hamper each year. I wrap everything for the hamper in gold paper to keep the suspense going for a bit longer and arrange nicely in a gold cardboard hamper tray filled with red shred which I buy in bulk from Amazon. I then cover it all in cellophane and tie with red curling ribbon. For example, this year DH's hamper is going to be Greek themed [loves the Greek Islands]. So far I have the board game Santorini, a beautiful wooden jigsaw called Greek Vacation, a number of Greek themed books/novels, a book on Greek mythology, a Greek cookery book, some Greek food/drink items including baclava, honey, ouzo, some souvlaki and other spices - anyway you get the drift I'm sure. He will love it. Another success was a bird themed one including a nesting box, camera, bird book, various bird feeders and different bird foods. That's a good one for difficult to buy for elders. Just be warned though - once you start this you won't be allowed to stop! Gosh they all love their hampers almost as much as their stockings!

I either use wooden crates & fill with shred & wrap with cellophane or cover a sturdy box & pack with shred, scrunched tissue paper - these are more food themed hampers.

For other hampers I use different things eg - have done a wheelbarrow packed with gardening gloves, seeds, tools, magazine, twine, plastic pots, garden clogs, canes, plant book, mug & cellophaned it all (did buy a huge amount of cheap cellophane !)

Have done a mixing bowl inc whisk, cutters, rolling pin, apron, oven glove, etc

Others: kept a posh lidded box & filled with tissue paper & then filled with make up brushes, lip balm, eye make up remover lotion, trial sizes etc & a teenage magazine + store voucher for friends DD (14) & wrapped box with big fancy wired ribbon bow.

Have this year bought some of the B&M initial stockings - for my friends DD intend to fill her with make up bits & bobs inc mascara, eyeliner from brands she loves & then in a card inside put some money so she can buy something herself that she chooses

For arranging - for me I usually sit in the clear area of my hallway & arrange a couple of different ways to see what looks best. I like using shred or tissue paper - have used a scarf once to line the "crate" as that was part of the gift - I like using irridiscent cellophane or plain but really covering it generously & I seal with twine, ribbon or rafia - sometimes I add decorations to it, depends who the recipient is.
