Table presents

Just curious, does anybody do table presents at Christmas and if so what type of thing are they.

I think I have brought my girls more than they will fit in their santa sack so was thinking maybe I could hold back a present or two until dinner time

we do them (they were a thing in DH's family, i'd never heard of them). i usually try to make them something silly to make us laugh or something to play with to extend the time we stay at the table. One year I bought us all a Mr Man book that was appropriate, Mr Grumpy, Mr Bump etc, another year the kids got roller coaster straws, usually I get some type of quiz game.

We also do table presents, I keep it different every year so they don’t know what to expect and while it’s always something nice, sometimes its just something I’ve seen out and about that I think my girls will love other years it’s a main or bigger present.

I love to draw our present opening, hate that all the fun and magic is done within the first hour of the day so we do little things like table presents, the bad Santa game and things Santa has forgotten/dropped outside throughout the day.

Never heard of them. We just do crackers at the table.

But then we do managed to draw out present opening over two days, so probably not representative Grin

My Grandma used to do tree presents that were hung on the tree. We used to open them last in the evening.

I usually do. Something small and fun.

Wherearefoxssocks · 14/10/2020 17:36

My DP's family do this so we're going to do it from this year. Budget is strictly £5 or less. Last boxing day I got a gin glass. I think it's a nice tradition.

I'm thinking that I will get DS a book. No idea about the grown ups yet

We have always had stocking and one present in morning. Other presents after lunch. Then one silly present hidden in the tree to open over tea.

SuperFairy · 14/10/2020 19:00

We do them, it’s one family tradition that has stuck over the years.

They are usually silly stocking filler types but I do remember one year when I was about 10, I was a nail biter and my table present was a manicure set, that went down like a lead balloon, thanks mum 😂 😂

We do them. They vary from fun and silly, to sometimes a proper expensive surprise present! One year I did all board games which was fun. Or quiz cards. Not sure of the plan this year, a mixture of things I think.

treeeeemendous · 14/10/2020 20:12

Never done them but I will now! Thanks for the idea! Anything to make this year a bit more fun. Is it generally a present you can use/do at the table? I presume you open it before the meal?

Etinox · 14/10/2020 20:22

We do bad Santa and also have indoor fireworks. One year I got a musical game- little whistles I think. Horrendous.

goose1964 · 14/10/2020 20:26

I did them last year instead of crackers, just bought a random selection of stuff from Poundland.

30not13 · 14/10/2020 20:28

Bad Santa?

FinallyHere · 14/10/2020 20:40

Pmk to find out about 'Bad Santa'

We vary ours, some years it’s before starters and then we do crackers before the main, other years it’s crackers first and then table presents before pudding.

But that’s only because the ‘fun and merriment’ used to start with the pudding (1970s) when my Nan used to put actual money in the pudding (after cooking and before serving) and my grandad used to do Peter and Paul with bits of paper on his fingers.
He also used to pretend that he had a screw behind his ear that unscrewed his false teeth 😂
Us children had hours of fun at the table trying to unscrew his teeth and wonder where on Earth Peter and Paul used to fly to.

We also had huge debates over why one person got all the money that was in the Christmas Pudding 😆

Our family Christmases were the best.

Happy sigh. I love Bad Santa.
Like Secret Santa, everyone brings a wrapped present. You can agree charity shop or £5 or recycled. We’ve had books gifted previous years, novelty teapots, packets of biscuits, souvenir teapots etc. Everyone picks a numbered card to choose the present order and the subsequent pickers can either unwrap a new present or steal one that’s been opened already.

Better description copied:
Player #1 goes first (obviously). They choose a gift from the table, and open it.
Player #2 can either steal the gift from Player #1, or open a new gift. If Player #2 two chooses to steal the gift from Player #1, then Player #1 can only open a new gift, not steal the gift back from Player #2.
Player #3 can steal the gift from Player #1 or Player #2, or they can choose a new gift from the table. If Player #3 steals a gift, whichever player gets their gift stolen gets to open another gift or steal from another player.
Player #4 can steal from Player #1, Player #2, Player #3, or open a new gift. If Player #4 steals a gift, the player who gets their gift stolen gets to open a new gift or steal from any other player.
And so on, until the last gift is opened.
