Looking for recommendations of books for DD aged 11. She's just started secondary school and has been told she needs to read books more challenging.

She's asked for new books for Christmas but trying to find some new authors for her to try!

Thank you!

I bought my just turned 12 year old DD Anne Franks Diary for doing well in her 11+ and she has read it 3 times and says it’s her most treasured book.

I’ll be following this thread as gets through books like no tomorrow and I love seeing her face light up with a new book.

Have a look on the booktrust website, it's really good for recommendations of childrens books

Smallinthesmoke · 14/10/2020 10:35

Has she read Robin Steven's Murder most unladylike series?

My son is the same age and seems to be inhaling books at the moment. It’s been my biggest lockdown expense keeping him well stocked with books to read while libraries were closed! He also gets a recommended reading list from school which I find helpful.
The biggest hits for him have been:
The Maze Runner series
Who let the Gods out series (very funny)
Lockwood and co
The boy at the back of the class
The other side of truth
Wonder
Pig Heart Boy
His dark materials
Itch (loved the first one and there’s more apparently)
Ross Welford books

Despite being 11 and an avid reader himself, he and his sister still love me reading to them as well! It’s very relaxing for them and I love children’s literature! We all loved Pages and co, Murder most unladylike and currently enjoying the Girl who speaks bear.

Percy Jackson, Trials of Apollo, Kane Chronicles etc all series by Rick Riordan & all really good!

The Roman Mysteries by Caroline Lawrence series is also great!

Obviously Harry Potter is brilliant too.

I've got The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent & Dan Brown waiting in the wings.

I'm so glad I can visit charity shops for books again, I bought a couple of bundles of books off FB to keep my dc going over lockdown but charity shops are so much cheaper!

CoffeeChocolateWine I still read to my dc (11,10 & 8yrs) despite them reading mountains of books (8yr old not so much) & will carry on for as long as they like. It's a little bit of quiet 1 to 1 time with them & I love it.

I think the wolf Brother series by Michelle Paver is aimed at that age group. I got them from a neighbour as enjoyed some of her other books, not realising they're YA fiction, but I've really enjoyed the first two

CoffeeChocolateWine · 14/10/2020 16:54

Wolf Brother looks good. I’ve not heard of it before . Will add to my list!

Look at booktrust.org.uk, then look at their 'Bookfinder' page- you put in child's age and what genre of book you're interested and you get a lovely long list with reviews. A great tool.

My dd is 11 and is really enjoying the darren shan vampires assistant series at the moment. Shes also just started secondary school.

If your dd is into reading I highly recommend a kindle - so many free books. And ive bought many on 99p deals for dd and I. I got dds kindle second hand for £10, been well worth the money spent! I also got a disc off ebay with 1000s of books on for a couple pound a few years ago so we have plenty to read for free!!
