Board games for Christmas Day

Hello, looking for suggestions for board games for Christmas Day. I live with my DP, so just the two of us.

Depending on restrictions, we will be hosting the in laws and DP's siblings. I wondered whether you could recommend a good board game that we could play if we got a bit bored after dinner (Christmas Day with all its excitement does have those moments!). I'd like something fun, where everyone participates and maybe shouts out answers. If possible, a 2+ player, just in case, households can't mix and it's just me and DP.

Last year we got the Yes/No game (big hit with GPs), Throw Throw Burrito (bit juvenile), Exploding Kittens (got played all year).

The year before we got the Really Nasty Horse Racing game and it became somewhat.... er.... tense. It was billed on here as 'the game most likely to break up families' and I can see why. It is evil. It's a relatively straightforward concept but you can burn someone with a single card, just for the hell of it.

Chess + checkers set?

JMG1234 · 03/10/2020 10:24

Taboo is quite fun for a group setting (you have to guess as many words as you can in a minute but the person describing the word has a list of banned words they can't use). But doesn't work for 2 and 4 works best if everyone is of a similar level.

My favourite board game is Ticket to Ride, good for 2 or more players, but not so shouty and raucous (unless someone blocks your route for the sheer hell of it).

We love Uno as a family. I know it’s not a board game, but you can play with the two of you or loads of family. We have two decks of the cards if there’s a lot of us playing.

Sequence is my new found addiction, as well as The London Game.

Linkee
Smart Ass

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 03/10/2020 12:39

For a crowd we love Linkee - we play it on Christmas evening. It's not a board game as such - it is quiz based - and we play it while squashed into my mum's living room. The beauty of it is that a lot of the questions a very simple so suitable for a huge age range but finding the link can be a challenge.

My favourite game for a "round the table" gathering is Articulate.

We do like the Really Nasty Horse Racing Game but we haven't played with less than 4 players.

My all time favourite for two players is Uno.

Exploding kittens is a family favourite. If you’re all adults and no one too prude, then Cards against humanity is always a good laugh!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/10/2020 12:49

Articulate if a group (not 2player)

bravotango · 03/10/2020 12:51

If Articulate is popular, try Monikers? Also we LOVE Dixit for a group and it gets better after everyone has had a drink or two. Also bluffing games like Coup, The Resistance and Avalon are great for a playful and competitive group. Codenames is good for 4-6 players.

Don’t Get Got is good fun and can last all day whilst you do other things too. Played that as 6 adults (20s to 50s) and my DD(6).

We also love Monopoly Deal, Exploding Kittens...

What are you like? Are you into adult humour or not? We also played a game last Christmas that was very funny but quite rude.

Loving all the suggestions, thank you. No prudes in the household! I've played cards against humanity quite a lot, but anything along that theme is all fine. It is quite a 'loud' family (not sure how to put that nicely, but that are lovely!) so any game that winds people up and gets people shouting would be great!

Mr and Mrs is quite fun if most people there are in couples

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/10/2020 14:59

I've bough a Wooden Sling puck game. Looks like something Dd and I would get competative with

@FedUpAtHomeTroels

I’ve bought that for DH after seeing it advertised on Facebook. It looks like fun.

Equimum · 03/10/2020 17:06

I came on to say Exploding Kittens - it’s quick to learn and great fun with both 2 and more players. Our seven year old started playing a couple of years ago, and grandparents in their 70s love playing too!
