Alexa controlled colour changing lights - not Philips hue

After resisting for years we are inviting alexa into our home this Christmas. I am getting ds an echo dot with clock or a echo spot, not sure which one yet.

Can anyone recommend any colour changing/dimming bulbs that aren't extortionate like Philips hue and don't need a hub? Size E14.

I can see loads on amazon, looking for recommendations.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I think to use the majority of smart features, you need a hub. Without the hub, you just use the item like a normal lamp (ie controlling it via the on/off button rather than an app).

I use IKEA tradfri

Just to be clear, I think without a hub you can’t control the lights via Alexa; just with a physical on/off button or physical remote, as the hub is what makes the lights able interact with the app

According to the Alexa app ours is a smart life . We don't have a hub, at least I don't think we do (i don't actually know what a hub is. We have Alexa and she turns the light on and off and changes the colour if i
I ask her to)
It was about £6 on amazon.
DS1 has a Philips hue in his bedroom but it's disconnected somehow and won't reconnect. It doesn't change colour either.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 02/10/2020 22:59

Sorry. I've just checked with the techy one aka DS1, apparently our Alexa is the hub! But it's the big pro one or something.

Amazon has these. I think they attach to your usual wifi without a smart hub and say can be used with alexa without a hub.

I have this bulb in my bedroom
www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07QYMMBCL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

I control it using the Alexa app on my iphone and iPad. Also with the Echo downstairs.

That was the kind of thing I was looking for, unfortunately that brand doesn't have a small screw E14 fitting.

I could be wrong but I think the newer Alexas are hubs.

Ikea ones are meant to be a good alternative and I like their accessories like switches (almost defeats the purpose?!) and dimmers for when you can’t be arsed with Alexa.

I don’t think you can beat Hue though and I got some great deals on Black Friday.

We just have a dot and she controls our colour change bulbs in the lounge without a hub. I'm not sure what brand they are as DP bought them but I'll try and remember to check tomorrow and report back.

WeAllHaveWings · 03/10/2020 00:29

Thanks @HowFastIsTooFast

@Hotelhelp the 3 hue bulbs for his light fitting are over £100 + the cost of the hub. What extra does the hue do? Does it have more functionality?

We have light bulbs and smart plugs, non of which need a hub. I'd recommend having a look on amazon, the listing will say if they are compliant with Alexa. If the listing says that you need to download an app to initially connect them to your WiFi I'd recommend that you use that for all of you smart accessories (we use efamilycloud)

HowFastIsTooFast · 03/10/2020 12:37

These are ours, they work fine just with an Alexa dot.

Hello @HowFastIsTooFast - we removed your image because it had your address on there!

WeAllHaveWings · 03/10/2020 13:11

Thanks howfast, they don't have them in the small screw fitment E14, but good to hear this type of bulb works well with just the Echo dot.
