We'd normally go for lunch at work but we are all wfh at the moment and I'm trying to think of what to do instead. It'll need to be virtual. Has anyone come up with any good ideas? I was wondering about whether we could do some sort of pub quiz or gingerbread man decoration competition. I suspect my team would roll their eyes.

It's for a team rather than the company, so I'm trying to think of something a bit fun.

You might have more encouraging replies than mine, but I do not want to socialise with my team on Zoom. It feels like a chore, not a pleasure. I am thinking of giving my team a half day off (when we'd normally go for lunch) instead which I think they'd appreciate more.

I'm not one for forced fun over a zoom call. Maybe do a little quiz that will last 10 mins. Have a 10 min chat then let everyone go off and enjoy the rest of the afternoon off with their family.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/10/2020 12:55

Do a quiz but have an actual prize- Xmas hamper for example that you will send to their home

Parker231 · 02/10/2020 12:57

My team are having a virtual drinks party on zoom. Everyone will receive a deliver of their favourite drinks (my PA knows them well!).

LadyCatStark · 02/10/2020 13:21

DH has done a few virtual escape room thingys which seem to go down well! I love the idea of sending everyone their favourite alcohol. Mind you my work will do absolutely nothing so I’d appreciate anything!

Good ideas so far. I know it will be difficult to have much of a laugh via zoom and work things can be a bit tedious, but I'm trying to lift spirits a bit. I agree with keeping it short.

Maybe quick quiz with a cheesy prize and then the rest of the afternoon off! They aren't into booze or socialising outside work time so evening wine and cheese and chat probably not going to work.

I meant socialising in a work capacity. I'm sure they enjoy proper socialising!!

I'd be down for virtual escape room or pub quiz via zoom as a works xmas do. I think they're great ideas personally. But I'm a lazy sod anyways, and if it means I can stay indoors in my pyjamas then I'm down for anything 😂

chipsandpeas · 02/10/2020 13:52

id dread a virtual xmas lunch, i use my lunch break to get away from work/laptop
im half expecting my team will try to do something like this

Startaler · 02/10/2020 14:26

One thing I saw over lockdown which could be quite fun, was a bake off style cake decorating competition. Each person makes/decorates a cake then you ask people to vote on the best one. All done lighthearted with a silly prize for the winner.

Squirrelblanket · 02/10/2020 16:14

Definitely a very short online meeting/quiz and then the afternoon off! I would love you for this. I fear that my team will be doing a virtual pub type thing which will be at 6pm on a Friday and will no doubt have some sort of 'hilarious' theme like wear a funny hat etc.

FizzyPink · 02/10/2020 16:20

I’m not sure of your budget but I went to virtual client event where they had a guy from Britain’s got talent do a sort of magic routine.

I’m the biggest sceptic of this sort of thing but it was brilliant and he got everyone involved. He’s called Alan Hudson and he’s on Instagram

Also placemarking for ideas I can steal to use for clients. We’d normally take them out for big expensive lunches so I need to think of an alternative this year

katy1213 · 02/10/2020 16:22

The afternoon off and no enforced jollity on Zoom.

FizzyPink · 02/10/2020 16:22

Other things I’ve done with my team have been virtual cocktail making, virtual horse racing and another time we all had to create a photo/model of someone else in the team and then we went round guessing who was who

HunterHearstHelmsley · 02/10/2020 16:24

We have a team work lunch every week. It really irks me that I'm expected to use my lunch break for it so I can my lunch straight after Grin Maybe make it optional? Or short with the rest of the day off?

@Parker231 that sounds fab, wish I was on your team! We don't work from home, NHS, but usually go out for a meal, we won't be this year. We cant even do our usual christmas picnic either as we're not supposed to share food, or have too many of us in the break room at once either. Christmas will be quite the anticlimax at my work I think.

We'd never ever be given time off for free either!

1000mangoesinabirthdaycake · 02/10/2020 18:40

The budget is whatever money I find down the back of the sofa! This is why I was thinking of supplying them with decorate your own gingerbread type things rather than something more lavish.

We're doing secret santa via Elfster. We'll probably have a zoom meeting to open our presents and may have a drink at the same time.

IvyRose77886 · 03/10/2020 11:42

I wouldn’t be Interested in a zoom quiz and I defo wouldn’t want to do a decorate a gingerbread house. I’d just give it to my kids.

Just give them the afternoon off.
