Does anyone else buy/wrap presents for themselves?

I know it sounds a bit strange. My father has no interest in shopping (or in my interests or likes). My DM died when I was younger, so for as long as I can remember he tells me to buy what I want and let him know how much. Money isn’t an issue, as he’s well off. I don’t always follow up though and usually don’t buy anything for myself and he wouldn’t remember/care either way.

This year I’m buying my presents from him, so that I can wrap them and put them in a nice box and they’ll be a nice surprise for myself on Christmas Day. Well, obviously not a real surprise, but I’ll have forgotten what it is by then 😊

Does anyone else do this? So far, I’ve bought:

  • some lovely fluffy sheepskin slippers
  • another pair of slippers
  • red checked pyjamas for Christmas Eve
  • Molton Brown shower gels and hand cream
  • fun socks
  • more socks
  • Philosophy Christmas shower gel
  • some lovely bath bombs
  • Benefit mascara set x3

So basically some treats that I could usually buy myself, but they feel frivolous. Can’t think of anything else to add. Maybe some candles.

I always budget to buy myself one really nice gift for Christmas. It was a tip I read on having a really nice Christmas years ago and it stayed with me!

I don't wrap it or wait until the day to have it though.

Hathertonhariden · 01/10/2020 19:32

I do a stocking for me because dc was upset that Father Christmas hadn't got me anything.

Oooh @CoronaIsWatching - that’s a good idea! Would really work for me as the DCs go their dads Boxing Day evening and because of covid suspect I will be on my own for a few days

Chocolate
Good bottle of wine
New books

Lovely cost stuff to enjoy between Christmas and new year.

I buy things for myself along with everyone else.
DH is good at buying things but doesn't have all the online links that I do.
They tend to be small things.
DH thinks it is a little nuts but doesn't mind.

I usually buy myself something because the only time I really look around shops is when Christmas shopping! I don't wrap them though, they just find their way into my bookshelf or into my wardrobe.

I may have already bought myself some Doc martens this year...

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 01/10/2020 20:42

Yes, i buy & wrap myself afew gifts that I put are off my 3 DD’s for Christmas, birthdays & mother’s day as I’m single, but now my eldest dd is getting older she likes to pick one or two things for me as a surprise and wraps them.

MrsElf · 01/10/2020 20:45

I put all the treats I buy myself in November/December in a stocking or gift bag to have when DH is asleep on Christmas Day. Like OP, DPs usually give me some money “for treats”, so it’s nice to be able to say “I’m spending it on....” when they phone and ask. Otherwise it vanishes into bills and petrol, and I feel cheated! Wouldn’t wrap anything, but I have been known to buy myself a new stocking.
Mum always did herself a stocking for Christmases at home, so it feels quite normal. (Dad is a truly awful gift giver, and her relatives all live too far for dropping in presents.)
If you count gifts for pets, I buy myself LOADS. I refuse to wrap them, but their stockings double as decorations, especially with the rawhide candy canes and teddies poking out the tops Grin
and lets not pretend that the Christmas vet bed, matching jumpers and sparkly collars aren’t for me

LadyofMisrule · 01/10/2020 21:13

I buy all the presents, and wrap them, including my own. That way I get what I want and my OH doesn't have to worry about it. I do myself a stocking too, otherwise the children would think that I'd been on the naughty list. :-)

Most years I come home from Christmas shopping trips with; books, Christmas socks, hair ties, little chocolate treats, wine/interesting cider, new woolly hat or scarf, a festive bath bomb, a new bauble or ten and a tiny jellycat soft toy to add to my collection. It beats thinking “I must remember that for when the sales start and I have my Christmas money!”

Pansypath · 01/10/2020 23:32

My parents give me cash each year that is meant to be just for me. I get it in Xmas day but I know it is coming so I have started buying myself nice things with it ahead of Christmas as dh and dc don’t always hit the mark. Last year I bought nice things like my favourite Hotel Chocolat treats.

Mustbethewine · 02/10/2020 00:07

My DP does this every year. He buys something for himself ever year, some expensive technological item and puts it under the tree. It started when he was living with his DM and its a tradition he still does now

Franticbutterfly · 02/10/2020 00:45

I have started to use DH's account to do this, this year (candles, scarf, socks) as everyone else gets a few little bits and bobs and I would like to join in.

Thehollyandtheirony · 02/10/2020 06:18

I sometimes buy myself little presents and give them to DH to put in my stocking. He has got a lot better over the years but he still doesn’t really ‘get’ stockings (didn’t have them as a child).
His version has a few thoughtful gifts in it but I like it to be bountiful and it doesn’t matter if the fillers are just practical things I’d buy anyway.

AnnaFiveTowns · 02/10/2020 06:32

I buy myself presents then give them to my husband to wrap so they're from him and thr kids. That way I dont end up with a load of crap I dont want but ive got something to open on xmas day. Could you not buy them then get.your dad to wrap them for you.

Lockdownhairdontcare · 02/10/2020 11:30

I buy and wrap my own stocking fillers. DH buys me gifts (I do send him a list to choose from of things I like) as do my parents and DC.

I enjoy filling the stockings and often forget what I have wrapped for myself.

Gertiegumboot · 02/10/2020 11:39

Yes I do this. DH buys presents in a rush at the last minute and they are usually nice but not what I actually want. I choose, wrap, parcel up all the presents for us, his family, and mine, so usually
put a small something on my list for myself too.

LizzieMacQueen · 02/10/2020 13:53

@JinglesWish Please please suggest a different hamper to your PIL. have a look at fortnum & mason and see if there's one that'd suit you better.

MonaChopsis · 03/10/2020 10:38

I do! Single Mum, and another one who's DD got upset a few years ago (sobbing tear stained letter to Santa on Christmas day... Just the kind of Christmas spirit I was trying to create Confused ). I now have a Santa sack and stocking, just like her, and buy myself slightly more treaty versions of things I would otherwise write off as too expensive (e.g. I need new slippers... Instead of buying £5 ones from Aldi now I'll make do until Christmas and buy myself some really nice ones from Celtic Sheepskin etc) I actually really enjoy it now. I normally treat everyone else but myself, so it's nice to think about what I would really like and buy it for a change!

lili12300 · 03/10/2020 10:53

I started this last year:) I often get money, so buy myself some treats beforehand that I love, and in my mind they are from the people who have given me money :)

percheron67 · 03/10/2020 10:57

This Christmas looks to be bleak for lots of us. I have depression and always recall what a Doctor said about little treats helping to keep morale up. To this end i have bought myself a beauty Advent Calendar. Shall probably buy a couple of things for Christmas morning as well.
