Hot wheels track, waste of money?

I can’t decide if a hot wheels track will be a good present for my DS or not. I’m looking at ones that have a loop the loop or some sort of stunt in the set up.

He will be almost 4 at Christmas and is particularly loving hot wheels cars (or any little metal cars) at the moment. The reviews are so mixed, I can’t tell if they are overpriced rubbish or whether they can actually be played with and fit for purpose?

Does anyone have any insight?

Thank you for sharing your experiences. DH is keen on the idea of a track - I’m really not sure! In principle it would be great present but not if doesn’t work as it should which DH isn’t getting.
@TheBlueStocking 50 cars! He must have been over the moon. That’s the wow factor I’d like to achieve somehow.

My nearly 7 yo plays with Hot Wheels but tends to play with his Dad with it. We've got two big boxes of it, so it lives in the cellar most of the time.

I'd say he was only able to get to grips with it at 5 1/2 plus, it was too fiddly before then. I think 4 is a bit young.

Brio trains/track was a much bigger hit at that age, he could independently build tracks and add other blocks even Lego structures to his 'town' too.

I remember my brother having one when I was a kid and now my nephews. All car-mad, but they never played with the tracks for more than a day or so. They take up a lot of room, too. Not worth it in my opinion.

Something like this, an actual garage, got played with endlessly.
