DIY gifts?

This year we're a bit short of money so I was thinking about handmade gifts or maybe nice cards for relatives we don't see often. I'm worried that people will be offended and I'm not sure I can make something really great. I mean, I'm going to bake cookies and a cake because I enjoy cooking, also I can knit scarfs pretty fast but this is where my imagination stops. Maybe you can share some ideas of DIY gifts that you were preparing or got from someone?

Yes, same here. I'm mass producing fingerless gloves/wrist warmers for my friends and female relatives to cut costs. I've made snoods in previous years, but gloves are quicker to make . I'm using lovely alpaca bought from eBay and they're working out at £2.40 per pair. People have seemed to be pleased with hand knitted things previously so I'm just hoping they like these. It's what I can do on a tight budget ..

I wouldn't worry about people being "offended" by handmade gifts: this year many of us are short of money due to everything that had happened. Knitted scarfs or mittens would be a nice gift, plus the fact that the particular thing was done for a particular person, it is great! Last year I was short of money as well, so I did photo calendars for several relatives of mine, I used their photos or the pictures of the things they like, like graffiti for my cousin and pictures of my aunt's cat for her calendar. You can either order the calendars of your design from Shutterfly (that's what I did) or make your own in photo calendar makers like the one from photo-calendar-software.com (that's what I did, too), and you'll have to pay only for the printing. Guess this year I'll have to do the same as it seems to be the only not-out-of-budget option (I can't knit).
Here is also a list of craft Xmas gifts for you, maybe it well help- www.goodhousekeeping.com/holidays/gift-ideas/g1266/handmade-gifts/
And yes, if you are planning a gathering, a simple card for relatives you don't communicate a lot with would be enough. It's not really about present, after all.
