Given everything that's going on, I was thinking to try to buy things made and sold in the UK.

Don't have any particular criteria, I'm mainly buying for men (DH and adult sons) but I also buy my great nieces and nephews (from 4-16) a small thing.

I wondered if others were doing the same and we could maybe have a thread of things you've found or places you know about.

Just thought it would be good to show some support for local businesses (obviously all colours/race/religion/age/sex etc inclusive)

I've been thinking the same OP. Google 'makers markets' in your area. We have them here monthly and lots of local businesses have stalls with their wares - range from photos, pictures, pottery, through plants to food & drink.
We also have a local micro brewery, considering local beer for those who drink it.

Definitely local brewery or alcohols are a hit. Jams and perishables could make a nice hamper for older relatives.

Tea with nice cups and saucers from a British pottery such as the ones here makeitbritish.co.uk/top-ten/top-25-british-ceramics-brands.

Teddy bears - merrythought are lovely.

Again on the makeitbritish website some lovely scarfs and textiles

Floris for smellies
Fortnum & Mason for just about anything, so gloriously luxurious even for a tin of biscuits
Paxton and Whitfield for cheese
Nyetimber English wine
Harris Tweed - the accessories aren’t stupidly expensive and the little dog coats are lovely
Splashing the cash for a man - Emma Willis shirts

All sorts of slippers in various colours from Celtic Sheepskin.

I do recommend their house* boots for winter! Similar to Uggs but like all their slippers, made in Cornwall from local sheepskins, not in China with skins from who knows where.
*you can wear them outside but soles are lighter than for their outdoor boots.
Their service is also excellent and they do repairs.

TheSeedsOfADream · 23/09/2020 19:38

Celtic slippers are the best in the whole world imo.
Scottish fine soaps/Arran
Cheese hampers.

Local booze, cheese and preserves
Find a good local craft place with small business coffee roasters, artists, silversmiths etc eg www.cedarfarm.net in Lancashire which is amazing.

Bumping this one for some local business support.
Jolly’s of Orkney do fantastic hampers all the way from Orkney at very reasonable delivery price- often free etc or special offers. Follow on Facebook too.

Vouchers for haircuts in barbers/salon they normally go to. Far better than smellies.

Consider not in the high street and Etsy.

Maybe think local as well as British.

Randomness12 · 01/11/2020 07:38

I’d be wary of vouchers for local small businesses this year, Martin Lewis was talking about this on his last show. If they go under (hopefully not) then you effectively loose the gift as a voucher is worth nothing.

I’d try and buy a gift from a local/British shop this year just to be on the safe side.
