Unusual stocking presents

TFSRM · 20/09/2020 20:33

I usually try to find something unusual and (sort of) science related for DD for her stocking. In previous years I've got her:
Rubik's cube
Radiometer
Toroidz rings (recommended on MN)
sparking wind up toy

Any ideas for what I could get her this year?

How old is she OP?
What about tornado spheres?
Potato clock
Spider robot kit

TFSRM · 20/09/2020 20:55

Tornado spheres sound perfect. DD is 10.

Something off the UKGE website (recommended on here.) I've bought DC1 a beautiful polished ammonite but they do all sorts of fossils as well as meteorites etc at very reasonable prices.

Tangledtresses · 21/09/2020 12:05

Great ideas 💡

TFSRM · 21/09/2020 13:21

Thanks for all the ideas. I've added the non-transative dice, gyroscope and ammonite to the list Smile

My DC is currently fascinated by rocks, crystals and fossils so planning to pop some of those in their stocking this year.

FitzsFool · 21/09/2020 13:47

Oops, seen that Pepperwand has already suggested that.
That UkGe site looks great though, grateful for the recommendation.

Energy stick - human conductor- lights up when you touch each end no matter how many people are holding hands. Even my teens love this one!

anameisanameisaname · 21/09/2020 14:24

For year round entertainment
Something weather related if you have outside space a rain gauge cheap to buy or make your own, outdoor thermometer, weather chart record to fill in or similar.
Subscription to kids science magazine, there are a few different options, put 1st one in the stocking.
Binoculars, bird book and bird feeder keep a record of what they see.
Pop a diary in her stocking there are many “watches” organised through the year bugs, birds, bats, butterflies, frogspawn are a few I remember off hand they actively seek participants around the U.K. to help them count. You could sign up to them as a family and she could put them in her diary and be the “ the one in charge”.

TFSRM · 21/09/2020 14:25

@I8toys the energy stick looks brilliant!

Place marking

haba · 21/09/2020 14:43

I agree a weather station that she could have on the outside of her window will be used all year.
Maybe a compass?
Haba do a Fabulous children's microscope too (I don't work for them! We have lots of their toys, which is where my username came from Blush) it comes with tweezers, blanks slides, little sample jars etc. DS loved his, and always took it out and about with him.

ShaunaTheSheep · 21/09/2020 17:27

@FitzsFool

My DC is currently fascinated by rocks, crystals and fossils so planning to pop some of those in their stocking this year.
In a museum shop I found a tiny clear box that has labelled samples of different stones eg amethyst, snowflake obsidian etc. For a stocking friendly £2.50.
Coldhandscoldheart · 22/09/2020 06:28

I had also been going to suggest astronaut ice cream, I got some in my stocking at around that age & thought it was great.
We had some of the catchable bubbles a while ago & whilst mine are much younger i couldn’t get them to work well at all, just got a sticky mess.

sashh · 22/09/2020 06:43

I got an electronics kit at that age, it meant I could build lots of different projects. These days youtube has lots of ideas with basic 'bread board' and wires and it's something that can be added to.

Myles Power (Youtuber and Chemist) has some science kits he has put together and shows you have to do things like create fire you can hold (maybe not that one unsupervised)

The only thing my 9yo DD has asked for is carrot seeds, so I'm popping seeds into their stockings.

I can also recommend a book called Kitchen Science (it's massive, so maybe not a stocking filler!) It has over a hundred experiments that can be done at home with stuff around the house. My DDs favourite is instant ice cream (using the reaction between salt and ice to produce ice cream without a freezer)

I always get my stocking fillers from Urban Outfitters - they have good 50% sales in the home section and great things for teens - maybe a bit too old for your 10 year old but some interesting things.

everythingisginandroses · 23/09/2020 22:41

@I8toys - just bought an energy stick and fallen down an immense wormhole on the Urban Outfitters site - there is so much cool stuff on there that my DS would love - thank you! Xmas Smile
