I am worried about how shit xmas is going to be this year. I want to turn our house into a grotto - cheaply if possible! Any ideas on how?
I'm going to do a xmas film every saturday with xmas snacks and then every day when they break up from school.
Build a gingerbread house

Every year I redecorate the sun room ( where 10 of us have Christmas lunch) into a different themed grotto . This year I am going for the “Log Cabin” effect .
Cabin fever after the year we have had ... geddit ?
We are free of Corona virus and have no restrictions here ..we are very lucky.
One full wall and the low wall will be wallpapered in log cabin paper . It only takes me a morning to do .
The wall into the living room with French windows might be painted like mountains or might be left with the sparkly blue paint that is already there .
Lots of hanging stars from the criss- cross fairy lights on the ceiling.
Maybe snow flakes on the windows .
Remote control candles dotted around .

This would be an indulgence (£95!) but it's so sweet. Alessi.

As for the nativity scene - can you crochet one?!

GunsAndShips · 27/09/2020 13:06

I always turn the downstairs into a bit of a wonderland. We go for a homemade theme usually. Lots of paper chains, strings of popcorn, dried oranges with cloves, cinnamon etc. I've got bunting I made from Christmas fabric. Lots and lots and lots of snow globes (I collect them) with lights near them so the light reflects. We make paper snowflakes and lanterns.

One of my favourite things requires a bit of timing. I start hyacinths off so they bloom throughout December. I have lots of glass hyacinth vases in various colours. I put them on the dining table, coffee table and side tables with candles between/next to them and the light is beautiful bouncing off the vases and they smell incredible.

I go and collect foliage to make garlands to go on the fireplace and on top of bookcases, as well as a few wreaths. DD collects fir cones and spray paints them, as well as twigs and makes pom poms from wool and creates some quite striking decorations with them.

Our Nativity was knitted by my Grandma many years ago. We also have a couple of big wicker hamper baskets in the corner of the snug and dining room, next to the armchairs and they're filled with Christmas books and have a pile of festive cushions and throws next to them.

We also have some vintage Chinese paper lantern decorations, vintage Christmas tins and we replace the crockery with my Christmas Spode and all the mugs are swapped out too.

Lots of other things too. I adore doing it and the children are counting down to December 1st.

As for the nativity scene - can you crochet one?!, thanks but probably not, myhobbyisouting, because I still have an unfinished ‘Knit your own Royal Wedding’.
I gave up when I got to the Archbishop.

myhobbyisouting · 27/09/2020 13:28

Hahaha 😂

SallySeven · 27/09/2020 13:35

I can't imagine the patience required to make those tiny detailed figures.

I got lost on the internet looking at all the variations. The Poldark one has an uncanny resemblance!

SallySeven · 27/09/2020 13:36

The hyacinths are a lovely idea. Am I too late already?

GunsAndShips · 27/09/2020 16:38

Absolutely not @SallySeven.

Get some pre-prepared ones now and start them off ASAP. Should have some ready for throughout December.

SallySeven · 27/09/2020 16:39

Sorry to be a bit dense but in what way are they preprepared?

GunsAndShips · 27/09/2020 16:41

Picture nicked from Google but mine look like this and candles or lights between them look beautiful as a table arrangement. Obviously with the flowers out they look even better and smell great.

Hyacinths need a period of being kept in the cold and dark before you plant them. Prepped ones have had this done already so they're ready to go. Saves you time.
SallySeven · 27/09/2020 16:43

Thank you!

harper30 · 27/09/2020 17:47

I'm going to go bonkers with fairy lights. We were supposed to get married this august and that's all postponed, but I had bought about 500m of fairy lights to decorate the village hall, inside and out 🤷‍♀️ so our house will be like Blackpool illuminations this xmas! I'll try to add pictures if I remember, everything is going up the last weekend of November in this house 👍
