Spending £600 oh DH, have I gone over board?

Hello,

We have a baby due in January and before now we didn't really buy each other anything for Christmas, we sort of bought our own and said it was from each other 😂.

But with it being our last Christmas as a single couple I wanted to treat him as in future years it's all gonna be about our son (who probably won't get £600 spent on him).

I've got him:-
Ps5 (that was £450 alone so that's why it's so expensive).
A £80 backpack he really wanted
A new coat and I was thinking about getting him some cute stocking fillers from baby.

I feel like I've gone a bit overboard but who cares it's Christmas 😂 and people have made it clear they won't be getting us anything and it'll all be baby things.

What have you got your other half's or what are you thinking of getting? X

Well if you can afford it is all that really matters. DH and I set a £25 limit. We have everything we already want/need.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/09/2020 20:33

Well I'm not sure it's have bright him a ps5 a few weeks before the baby comes, he'll get a few weeks of play then it'll be shelved for how long?

Ultimately if you can afford it and are happy to spend it it's fine,, will you be sad if he doesn't get you anything though

GachaBread · 18/09/2020 20:36

Can I ask how you got a PS5 as they don't drop for sale until November.

MaverickDanger · 18/09/2020 20:36

It’s quite a lot, but if you can both afford it, then why not. I’d want to make sure that DH was thinking of spending a couple of hundred on me, rather than it being £50, while he’s opening all of those presents!

I’m due in December so also planning to get things in advance now.

Have got him some sport shorts & joggers, as he’s mainly been wfh in his scruffs, will get some nice new kitchen knives as he loves to cook and then a big stocking which will come to about £100.

I normally spend 250-300 on him most years, so this year will be the same.

I'm giving him the ps5 when it's comes out on the 19th November so he'll have a couple of months with it beforehand and then when baby comes he may need to part ways with it for a little while.

I don't mind him not getting me anything, he's been the best since I got pregnant (and before that to be fair) but I've had a hard pregnancy, I've had HG, been in hospital, had loads of time of work and DH has done all the housework, looked after me, stroked my hair and patted my back when I've been sick, cleaned up my sick Blush (I know this is what DHs do anyway but he didn't have to and I know some don't) so I wanted to treat him, it'll probably be the last time x

They went on pre order yesterday I believe, I managed to bag one on very today. Don't know if they are still available though as everywhere else was sold out.

I'm giving him the ps5 when it's delivered on the 19th of November though so super early Christmas present.

Congratulations, a Christmas baby that's the best present Thanks

We don't normally get each other anything so I suppose the 5 years we've been together it's not that much haha

I was 74 thousand and something in the queue today when I got the email from Curry's regarding the pre order and then after an hour or so got told no more stock, had similar stories with other retailers too.
I'm a tad jealous! Hope I can get one before the big day.

BeaLola · 18/09/2020 20:45

I think that if you can afford it that's fine - why not , my DH is lovely and the year before last I bought him a new iPhone as a Christmas gift which though he didn't ask for he absolutely loved - i much more enjoy him or my DS pleasure when they get a good gift from me.
Congrats on yr baby Smile

delilahbucket · 18/09/2020 20:46

If you can afford it then it doesn't matter. I don't tend to add up what I spend, I just buy him things I know he will really like and use. He's got a big birthday first though and I have splashed out for that. Not thought about Christmas yet.

Oh blimey! I went on a 3am to game and could order it (I wasn't purposely up at 3am to get it, I just need to pee all the time GrinGrin) and I thought nah I'll get it tomorrow, I checked everywhere on Thursday, no such luck and then I randomly tried very at lunch time today and it let me buy it so since I've paid for it and it's in "my orders" I'm assuming I've got it GrinGrinGrin I think they'll release more stock before November (fingers crossed) - to be fair I sort of got it for me too, the new Harry Potter game looks amazing, and I want the game where you play as a cat GrinGrinGrinGrin

Oh you're sooooooo gonna resent that PlayStation once baby's here.... I guess they have good resale value!

Holothane · 18/09/2020 20:51

We spoilt ourselves for our birthdays in June July this year as no holiday but they where useful presents, if you can abhors it no debt then have it and enjoy.

That's sorta what I've done, we usually go on bigger holidays rather than buy each other presents but with mr covid19 (or Mrs Grin) I got some money back so I thought a nice end of the year treat would be good (and because he's been the best while I've been pregnant)

I did think this before buying it but he's honestly been awesome during pregnancy, he's literally done everything so I think he'll do his fair share once baby is here Smile plus they haven't brought out any good games yet Grin

@Closingtime94 hopefully will get one for my oldest then before xmas. I think your partner is going to be very happy with those gifts and congrats on the little one. I remember those days well peeing every 5 minutes and waddling around like a penguin. Looks like the new year will be an exciting time for you all. ♥️

Cherryrainbow · 18/09/2020 22:04

Sounds awesome if you can afford it hopefully he will treat you too :)

As someones whose kids fathers are gamers (me not so much but i play now and then) you'll probably find it will keep them entertained in the wee hours when they're up with the baby and you get some sleep Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 18/09/2020 22:45

My only advice then is try not to have your baby before Xmas. I know once Pele get to 37 weeks they think aah baby will be fine if it comes early, and not sure what post of Jan you're sure but def nothing that'll being in baby before Xmas, December babies suck 😂😂

SleepingStandingUp · 18/09/2020 22:46

Oh sorry @MaverickDanger 😂😂😂😂😂 I had twins Dec last yr, but you'll be fine 😂😂

Isadora2007 · 18/09/2020 22:51

Nah it’s fine.

LetsPlayAGame20 · 19/09/2020 12:44

Me and dh don't normally Buy for eachother but this is baby's 1st Xmas. We have dsd here and ds isn't with his dad, 1st Yr toddler understands so we are buying for eachother.
We've set £100 limit.
I'm tempted to do a mini stocking each too but I'll buy mine, like Smellies etc as I'm a bargain hunter. Dh would just go to one or 2 shops and pay over the odds.

Where did you order a ps5 from? DH wants one 😂
I managed to get it from VERY on Friday - I don't know if they are still available though - they flew off the "shelves" so quickly

Would you cancel the pre-order if we said yes?

Does it matter what others think, if you can afford it and believe he needs to be rewarded for stepping up as a parent then go for it. You don't need MN approval.

ScrapThatThen · 19/09/2020 19:26

I think it's nice. And if he gets it in November - it's not really for Christmas - he has time to get you something lovely. However, becoming parents is hard, and can trigger or establish inequalities and lead to resentments, so make it a one off.
