As the title says really! I’ve just been buying bits and bobs for our Christmas cake. Last year DH made one for us and 5 friends and family, they were a huge hit so we’re - the Royal we obvs, are making them again this year.

We tend to like the simple look and last year was holly, well this year is going to be snowflakes and we’re aiming for something close to the picture.

Is it stupid I get overly excited by this??

@weaselwords have a look for Nigella Lawsons Christmas cake. The amount of wheat flour in it is minimal, so you should be able to substitute GF flour without too much difficulty. I like Nigella as she cooks with a lot of almond flour / ground almonds (incl this recipe) as it always gives a really rich result. Her GF brownies (made with almonds) are the most amazing thing ever...

Not sure for this year .
I make the cake and my talented dd ices them every year .

I think this year I will do the sun room ( where we eat) log cabin style . I just wallpaper 2 walls in cheap wallpaper and theme around that .

Anyway here are the last 5 years’ cakes.

Ours will be exactly the same as last year’s mainly because it IS last year’s.

It was very beautiful, but there was so much other food it never got cut. It has been copiously clingfilmed and looks fine.

There is a precedent for this.

The top layer of my first wedding cake was kept by my mum as the tradition goes (or used to go) ready for the first child’s christening.

By the time first child arrived, I was with a different husband.
Mum came up for Christmas complete with cake, DS was born at home on 28th December and we all sat around our bedroom munching the still perfect cake.

That is beautiful.
I've never made a Christmas cake as no one in our house likes it except me, however I'm planning on making some mini ones to put into hampers for grandparents.

For those whose families don't like Christmas cake, do you not just make different cake? We usually have chocolate cake, unless we also have a yule log in which case we have a different flavour. Without the fruit it doesn't last as long but that has never been an issue in our family!

weaselwords my Mum made me an amazing gf Christmas cake last year, so it can be done! I've just asked her to make me one for this year as well!

BrandyandBabycham · 14/09/2020 19:07

We don’t make one. Sometimes have a Dundee cake but never that bothered really.

weaselwords · 18/09/2020 20:32

Thank you everyone for your gluten free suggestions. I’ve just text my mate to suggest we plan when to make the cakes, as we always do them together. Really looking forward to it!

You can make it up to a month before to let the alcohol mature, or Delia has a recipe from her 1990 Christmas book for one you make on Christmas Eve using mincemeat (in reply to poster who asked when to make one).

I’m so excited, my ribbon etc has arrived. Fruit is soaking - I absolutely love the smell but hate Christmas cake...
