Me and DH have just got our first house and are hosting for my family! Xmas day is pretty much sorted but I'm completely stuck for Boxing Day food ideas! There's one vegetarian but the rest eat everything! What do you normally do/eat on Boxing Day? Deff don't want any type of roast or similar!

Boxing Day is "lounge around eating leftovers, cheese and chocolates while playing with your Christmas presents" day here.

I sometimes stretch to making a beef sandwich or bubble and squeak.

Cookerhood · 06/09/2020 21:16

Cold turkey, cold ham, salad, bubble & squeak, pigs in blankets, little sausages. Cake & mince pies. Yum, better than Christmas day.

EarlGreyJenny · 06/09/2020 21:25

Cold turkey, ham, poached salmon etc. Lots of salads. Baked or boiled potatoes. Love Boxing Day food

VestaTilley · 06/09/2020 21:33

We always have the leftover meats with homemade chips, Bubble and Squeak and chutneys, pickles and a big pork or game pie. Followed by leftover Christmas pud and trifle.

My favourite meal of the year!

2anddone · 06/09/2020 21:36

We have a big fry up about 11.30am and then eat leftovers and chocolates for the rest of the day

LunaLoveFood · 06/09/2020 21:50

We have the part baked baguettes, a ham, left over turkey, stuffing.
Then a cheese board and crackers. Then our body weight in chocolate,. biscuits and sweets.

If anyone is hungry at dinner/supper time we do bubble and squeak.

RainbowMum11 · 06/09/2020 21:53

The best thing about Christmas dinner is the leftovers!!
Although I have a second family meal on Boxing Day (Christmas day with Mums side of the family, Boxing Day with Dads) so save the leftovers for the day after!!

narcdad45 · 06/09/2020 21:55

Cold meats usually ham and turkey, Cold stuffing balls, homemade coleslaw, mash potatoes, cheeseboard with pickles and homemade chutneys.

thelegohooverer · 06/09/2020 22:15

Last year I hosted pils, and for breakfast I just pulled all the usual cereals, porridge, marmalade, yogurt, juice and bread out of the cupboards and let everyone sort them selves as no one was in the mood for anything heavier after the big day.
We sat talking over coffee until lunchtime while the dc played, watched movies, grazed on sweets etc.
Then we pulled out the left overs for lunch. Fil and dh had theirs reheated (bunged in the microwave). Mil and I grazed buffet style on cold meats, coleslaw, crusty bread and the cheese board.
It was very low key and thoroughly enjoyable as a natural contrast to the excitement and indulgences of the previous day.
In other years I’ve made more effort and it’s fallen flat. I really think less is more on Boxing Day.

Sheknowsaboutme · 06/09/2020 22:18

Turkey chips with peas and bread and butter. Always cooked by DH. Then salad, cheese, nibbles etc.

TwizzledTurkey · 06/09/2020 22:31

Breakfast we usually have sausage/bacon sandwiches and then for the rest of the day it’s just buffet food from m&s, cold meats, salads, cheese board and leftovers. I love Boxing Day!

Lockdownhairdontcare · 06/09/2020 23:04

I love Boxing Day!

No one is ever up before 11am Blush

Breakfast is a help yourself affair... cereal, porridge, muesli etc.

Late lunch of leftover toasted sandwiches. My personal favourite is turkey, ham, pork stuffing and pigs in blankets with Cornish cruncher cheddar on sourdough. It is so damn good!

We tend to skip dinner and just have leftover trifle/cheeseboard/sweets

The day is spent playing with new toys, games, watching films and dozing.

ShaunaTheSheep · 06/09/2020 23:24

Ideally cold Christmas pud and brandy butter for breakfast, and fresh baked baguettes stuffed with leftover roast or cheese for supper.

If entertaining, a baked ham and fried eggs served with chips from the chippy. Or a cottage pie (made and frozen beforehand) peas and red cabbage. Followed by trifle and a cheeseboard.

Mustbethewine · 07/09/2020 00:23

Usually cooked breakfast to aid any hangovers. As its just me and DP this boxing day (DC with their DF) we'll probably have left over meat with pickles, crusty bread, chutney and chocolate

Whathappenedtothelego · 07/09/2020 09:22

I love Boxing Day!

We have a late brunch about 11.30 - bacon, eggs, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast.
(DC usually have cereal too when they first get up, I have variety packs for everyone that wants).

A walk to make the most of the light, coming back to tea and mince pies or Christmas cake around 4.30.

In the evening, (just like most people on the thread), we have cold sliced turkey and ham, green salad, coleslaw, and hot potatoes, followed by Christmas pudding - we never used to want it on Christmas Day, so now having it when it's dark on Boxing Day is our family tradition.

sapnupuas · 07/09/2020 11:21

Buffet. I thought everyone had a Boxing Day buffet with the leftovers!

bumbleb33s · 07/09/2020 11:39

@sapnupuas Agree, Boxing Day is definitely buffet day for anyone and everyone to pop in :)

slightchill · 07/09/2020 11:57

Boxing day spread!

Cold turkey, cold ham, cold stuffing (we make a family recipe which is basically breadcrumbs, butter, lemon rind, parsley etc which we make specifically for Boxing day as it's delicious cold!) , cold sausages, a variety of salads (usually one large green salad, another chicory, watercress and walnut , and another cucumber or fennel) with some good dressings both vinaigrette and honey and mustard), , brown shrimps, a truckle of cheddar or stilton, crackers, chutneys etc, pork pie or game pie, ..that sort of thing. It's my favourite meal of the year!

Purplequalitystreet · 08/09/2020 08:49

On Boxing Day we generic go to the in laws and do the whole turkey thing again! Not sure what will happen this year though

StCharlotte · 08/09/2020 11:09

We do the annual Christmas "omelette".

www.oceanspray.co.uk/Recipes/By-Occasion/Christmas-and-Leftovers/Leftover-Bake

You could do a vegetarian one alongside by leaving out the meat.

BiddyPop · 08/09/2020 14:10

Lots of leftover cold meats and stuffing.
Bowls of dips like hummus and salsa, with carrot sticks, pepper sticks and bread sticks to dip into them. And some olives in a different bowl, and cherry tomatoes in another.
Things to put into sandwiches - pickles, tomatoes, coleslaw etc
Bowl of green salad.

Cheese and crackers.
Part baked rolls, freshly baked.

Or plan ahead and have the main part of the meal frozen, to just reheat in the oven while you maybe cook some rice/pasta and throw some bowls at the table.
Like a chilli con carne and a vegetarian chilli, served with rice, salsa, tacos, guacamole, crème fraiche, mixed bean salad etc.
Or a lasagna and a veggie lasagna with leaf salad, coleslaw, cherry tomatoes and olives.

For afters, plates of mince pies and brownies, bowl of chocs, cheese board (if not already part of a cold platter), etc, and maybe some ice cream (if you have freezer space, and time ahead of time, you could do what hotels do - let icecream in tub thaw enough to scoop out proper balls and nicely shape them, put onto a tray and refreeze hard, then gently put into a large tub with space between the balls and greaseproof paper between layers - so you just need to serve them but they look impressive on 26th).

In our case, we just throw many packs of M&S party food into the oven as we have a moving feast (some people arrive mid-afternoon and stay a short while, others arrive much later, and some stay until wee small hours - so we just make more as people need it), and plenty of crisps and dips. With pots of mulled wine and many (many) bottles of Lidl's prosecco (very tasty!!).

BiddyPop · 08/09/2020 14:14

I do make a ham and stilton gratin over the post-Christmas season, but never on Boxing Day as it is a bit of work layering it up.

We also make a special turkey curry but that's usually 27th.

The beauty of the M&S food is that we can get a big range of things, mix of veggie and non-veggie, and we always make sure that at least half is freezeable so if we don't use it all, we throw it in the freezer for another time when we don't want to bother cooking or just want nibbles. (And they normally all cook at the same temperature in the oven.)

nancybotwinbloom · 08/09/2020 14:47

Turkey curry.

Cold cuts

And a Buffett

ifiwasascent · 08/09/2020 20:30

Thanks everyone! I was thinking of a lasagna or something but yeah I think Wel have so much leftovers I'll just do a nice big buffet!
